Episodes : Basics Part 1, Basics Part 2

Lucy of Nine

Commander
Red Shirt
Just watched this, and really enjoyed it. Would like to know your thoughts about it.

Some things I thought - The Kazon seemed to give up pretty easily, once the Talaxians boarded them... I thought the Kazon wouldn't go down without a fight. Why is it that Seska died but the others didnt (I think I must have missed something there...)

Did we see the Dr telling Chakotay that the baby wasnt his? I cant remember seeing that. That would have been nice to see the relief in Chakotay's face.

Also, seems to me that Tom Paris (and obviously Suder but he died, and the Dr) were the reason the ship was saved. I thought Tom deserved a promotion after that episode!

My last little moan (LOL) is that I would have loved to see the whole crew on the surface, all 140 odd of them. Every time we saw the crew on the surface, it was no more than 30 odd people. I know that early on, in the episode, the crew split into 4 teams, so that makes sense we'd only see about 35 people per group, but later on, when the volcano is exploding, and they are all running from camp, surely the whole crew would have been in the same place. Surely they could have had a few more extra's, or CGI'd the crew in. It would have been a great sight to see everyone at once on the planet.

:)

This is my favorite two-parter and one of the most underrated episodes of the series, imo. I thought it was interesting to take the crew away from all their modern technology and see how they survive. Sure, there were no borg or kewl explosions but the storytelling more than makes up for it. :)

I definitely agree. I adored this episode cause it made you think and wonder at the same time.

Some parts that really got my attention:

-when Kullah makes the whole Voyager crew kneel down in front of the bridge. Janeway gets slapped by him and then gets caught by her ever loyal second in command, Chakotay. My mouth dropped literally when that happened!
-when Kullah takes over the ship-I threw something at the TV set and started swearing..saying something like: you stupid Kazon bastards!!!!! You can't get away with this!!!!
-The doc was hilarious in this episode!!! Once when he's beamed into space and then the other time when he tells Seska that sticks and stones won't break his bones. This dude really cracked me up at times and had me rolling here! :)
-when Janeway's hair had to be cut for kindling for the fire. :wtf:?! I was like: hey don't take her hair!!!! What the hell are you doing?! :D
-when Seska dies and Kullah immediately abandon's the ship. I was like YEEESSSSS!Thank you GOD! :D
-the cave-dwellers- at first they didn't want to have anything to do with the Voyager crew but then after Chakotay saves one of their own from a lava flow, they provide medicine for Wildman's baby and gives the crew a better place to stay away from the Volcanic eruptions. :)
-the part where Chakotay and the away team go underneath the caves where that monster was living. THAT sent me chills! YIPE!
Overall, this episode was wonderfully written and I enjoyed every second of it. :)

YES! This has always confused me. All of the Kazon and a tiny baby can survive the phasery feedback induction flux loop thingy, but Seska just kinda dies.

It bothered me that Hogan became a redshirt in the opening scenes of part II. He was a good character and it's a shame they didn't make more use of him. Having said that, doesn't Chakotay lead them all into the cave where a blueshirt gets eaten, then they all end up walking back out of the cave anyway? The little people on that ship get no respect :shifty:

They should've known something was up when the teams were chosen - "All the main characters with me, we're going looking for a place to live. Anyone who's never been seen before, go and look inside those caves and around the volcano's edge for plants or rocks or something..."

 That seems to be a problem on all the shows.

ROFL! Soo true... I can just hear Kathryn saying with her hands on her hips "All main characters to safety. The rest of you... good luck, you'll need it."

As a complete J/C 'shipper, this is actually my favourite moment of the episode. :o

 That would've made a much better speech than the one she gave at the end of Year Of Hell, part I. Maybe add a bit of "We're a family. All of us. All seven of us. The rest of you. GET AWWWF MY SHIP!". Escape pods leave at ludicrous speed. Roll credits.

You have some really good points here in which I agree.

As for "Basics" I regard this two-parter as one of my top 5 Voyager favorites. Excellent and exciting.

I remember when I watched it the first time. I had to wait six months before having the opportunity to watch part 2 of it. That was six very long months!

Actually, as I understand it, the actor who played Hogan was contracted for two years as a recurring character, along with the actor for Seska. When Basics came, Hogan was simply offed as they saw no need to continue with him. The same thing happened with the guy who played Carey, but they simply dropped him in that case after the first season as a recurring.
