Kirk's pep talk, while rousing, is disturbing in its xenophobia.

KIRK: Give me your hand. Your hand. (she does) Now feel that. Human flesh against human flesh. We're the same. We share the same history, the same heritage, the same lives. We're tied together beyond any untying. Man or woman, it makes no difference. We're human. We couldn't escape from each other even if we wanted to. That's how you do it, Lieutenant. By remembering who and what you are. A bit of flesh and blood afloat in a universe without end. The only thing that's truly yours is the rest of humanity. That's where our duty lies. Do you understand me?*

"To seek out new life and new civilizations," and then shoot to kill because it's not human. I know this is glib, but sometimes Kirk welcomes the unknown ("The Corobomite Maneuver"), but other times he is quite afraid of the dark ("The Man Trap.")

No actual aliens were harmed in the filming of this episode.

I seem to remember an alternate universe story I read once years ago by David Gerrold in which JFK disdains politics to go into acting, and winds up with the role of Kirk on STAR TREK. Don't recall too many details of the story, though.
Then there was that time Spock shot him...crazy times.

It was only when Nimoy said "Ahdo-NAY-iss" on the Sci Fi special edition that I got it! :borg:

old news to some ...

we're all familiar with the "Trek guest star in another show" thing, but how often is it the "Trek guest star and her dress in another show" thing:

Leslie Parish in an ep of MANNIX

"Adonais" refers to Shelley's elegy for Keats

and I'm sure we all know Phase II has done a sequel to this episode.

Huh. I've been saying AH-doh-NAY-is for thirty years.

And it was "Continues" that did the sequel, not "Phase II".

Is there a list somewhere of these fan production companies? Someplace where I can get them straight?

The fact that one of them changed their name (New Voyages became Phase II, is that right?) makes it even tougher.

"That's a nice, little nothing you're always wearing. I approve." James Bond 007.

The line is: “That’s a nice little nothing you’re almost wearing.” And it was already a corny old joke back when Connery said it in Diamonds Are Forever.
