Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

INACTIVESamusAranX

Fleet Captain
So, it’s been name dropped in other threads, but I don’t see an official thread yet to discuss IX prerelease and what not, speculate on whether the title should be “Kylo Ren’s Big Adventure” or “Rose and Finn and The Underworlds of Coruscant”...ya know, super serious stuff.

The link above gives a clear summary of what we do know, and frankly it’s very little.

A few points from the recesses of my mind:

1. I am really wondering how they will resolve the Leia situation. An offscreen death just reeks of stink, and they already confirmed that Carrie Fisher will not get the Tarkin treatment. Maybe they’d be willing to splice dialogue together to give her speaking lines, perhaps over the com to Poe or Rey (“may the force be with you”) and keep her alive? Has there been any confirmation if she could be recast?

2. Rey’s parentage is open to exploration according to Rian in the link above. No, this isn’t forlorn hope that we get a retcon that Rey is the granddaughter of Kit Fisto, but they may look into her heritage more. I think an interesting concept, in harmony with Luke’s thoughts on the old Jedi, is to maybe have her parents be maverick Jedi who left the order due to fundamental disagreements and stayed safe from the purge, but descended into darker behaviors (the drunkenness as Kylo mentioned) and eventually left their only child on Jakku. Keep in mind Rian himself said in the article:

“He also suggested that Kylo Ren’s revelation to Rey might not have been entirely true: “With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given. But for me, dramatically, that’s why that reveal at that moment made sense.”

So he left the door open for JJ to add a little flair or slightly change her story, but I think that (and I hope) that they don’t go for the grandiose.

3. With JJ directing, is there any doubt this film may be similar to RoTJ, as he did with TFA paying “homage” to ANH?

Those are just my thoughts.

I really hope that it heads in its own entire direction as opposed to retreading ROTJ water.

As for Leia, I don't love the idea of her dying off camera, but I'm really not certain what else they might do. Its hard to do much when the actress is no longer with us. But, there are options.

I'd like to think that Rey really does come from no one. I think it returns Star Wars back to the basics. Back in ANH, there was no idea in place that one had to be special in order to use the Force. It you believed in it, if you let it in, it would guide you, hence Luke being able to take down the Death Star by guiding those torpedoes with just a little training from Obi-Wan. The whole midichlorian crap and the idea that you have to be connected to someone important to use the Force just makes the galaxy too small.

However, I wouldn't have a problem if she was a Kenobi.

Rey's parents maybe nobody but maybe she had a grandparent that was a force user and it skipped a generation to Rey.

I hope it is its own story and continues the threads that have been presented in the first two films.

I also have no doubts that there will be wild and reckless speculation because Abrams prefers not to leak information and fans will become upset and irate.

Man, there was so many correct leaks about TFA, I'm not sure how true that may be.

Agreed. But JJ...well he has track record of the opposite. So you never know.

Coming from two unknown Jedi would be to me, an interesting compromise.

Also while it wasn’t verbally made clear, it was quite evident that yes, you had to be “special” to use the Force. By that, I don’t mean of a strong bloodline, but certain people are born with Force sensitivity and others are not. There were literally dozens of characters in ANH, and only three were using the Force. In fact, so rare was the ability due to the Purge that Han Solo and Moff Motti mocked the notion of being able to use it. You didn’t have to be special in the sense you had to be a Skywalker or a specific gender, species etc but every movie always has those who can and those who can’t. And plenty of those characters clearly believed in the Force. But they couldn’t tap into themselves

Eh, reeks of fan fiction to me :)

Hadn't thought of that. Maybe.

I don't know if there's enough out there to really prove one way or another when looking strictly at the original 1977 Star Wars. I think its open to interpretation for sure.

And her being a Skywalker doesn't? (I'm not saying you ever suggested that. I don't know your opinion on that. Just sayin'. :p)

It certainly didn't sound like it was regarded as such. Fans that I know of who watched the film certainly see the Campbell-esque "low born rising to great heights" type theme in Luke, even if his parentage ended up being special.

Here is my speculations:
-I agree with the rumored time jump and that General Organa will have passed in the interim. I don't see them recasting the role. I don't know if there is any deleted footage they can use though as maybe a flashback or something if need be.
-I think Force Ghost Luke will play a major part in this. I think Force Ghost Luke will be more of the encouraging, wise mentor than he was in The Last Jedi.
-I also think that Rey's parents will be addressed. I wouldn't mind if her mother was Qi'ra from Solo. It would tie Solo more into the overall films and give it more 'importance', plus it could be a way to bring Emilia Clarke back into the mix, or even do some flashbacks perhaps with the Solo cast since it's highly doubtful that film will get a sequel.
-I don't see them bringing Snoke back, though we might learn more about him. It's still a question out there about Snoke's second apprentice. Who is that person, and what happened to them? Are they still around? This would be a great time to introduce a female dark side user in a live-action Star Wars film (Lumiya? Asajj Ventress? Nightsisters? I had read somewhere that they had been looking at Darth Talon from the EU at one point but didn't go with the character. Why not revive that idea?) That being said, they could resurrect Snoke so that Kylo and Rey join forces-on the light side for real this time-to defeat him.
-I think the film will revisit and tie up the Knights of Ren.
-I think Billy Dee Williams will return as Lando. He's the last major original trilogy actor that hasn't been revisited and with Solo being a reintroduction of sorts for the character, it's a natural move to bring him into the next film. With Han, Luke written out of the films, and Carrie Fisher's passing, bringing in Williams as that link to the original trilogy sounds like a no-brainer to me.
-I see Episode IX as a film that will attempt to repair the breaches with some disenchanted fans while still continuing to move forward with the sequel characters and story.

I wouldn't mind if her mother was Qi'ra from Solo.

Rey is what? About 20 when we first meet her? (According to Wookiepedia, she'd be 19). Qi'ra's 21 during the main events in Solo. There is 44 years between Solo and TFA. That would put Qi'ra as 45 when Rey was born. Not unheard of but probably not likely that Qi'ra would be Rey's mom. But we'll see.

I hope so.

1. I wasn’t aware Snoke had a second apprentice? Or were you referring to yet unseen, unheard, and unknown Knights of Ren?

2. I heard Billy Dee was unfortunately, in not so good health and in no condition to return to a movie starring role.

Yeah, it's a stretch for Qi'ra but not an impossibility. They could perhaps age the character (Lena Headey anyone?). What about Enfys Nest as a potential mother for Rey? She would be little younger than Qi'ra from what I've heard about the film.

I want to see Rey fall to the Dark Side of "The Force." She would make an awesome dark Jedi.

This sounds like a good plan to me. I would love Snoke's second apprentice to show up and there to be a conflict between Kylo and his Knights, and this other apprentice.

As odd as it sounds, Abrams is probably the guy to mend the fences that Johnson has been perceived to have torn down.
