Good catch! He certainly seems to fit what we saw of the Ba'ul in the preview trailer.

I buy it. It'll be funny if by 'old creature' he just means that this alien is like...I dunno, a thousand years old or something, and not automatically an alien from an older series.

Wow. I remember reading about his casting a while back and then forgot about it. Duh, he's a perfect fit for the Ba'ul /dark shadowy creature we saw in the preview.

Saurians could be considered as being and old Alien, since we first saw them in TMP.

What if the Baul fear Saru's people as an existential threat? What if the Baul are actually the prey and Saru's kind the true predator in the Great Balance. If they are ever allowed to fully mature naturally, that is. Perhaps that's when their intelligence, agility and strength are enhanced. We've already seen that Saru can sprint at great speeds, has a hell of a kick and can crush communicators with his bare hands. But he's also extremely intelligent and inquisitive. Imagine what his entire race could do if no longer shackled by fear and complacency.

So maybe the big con here is that the Ba'ul have created this whole culling ritual to keep the Baul from realizing their full potential. They are taken and euthanized as soon as they present signs of the next stage of their development. The Ba'ul look creepy and nightmarish. What if it's all smoke and mirrors, the man behind the curtain stuff? An illusion of power. They've cultivated a terrifying mask which helps keep the others submissive and reluctant to resist their fate.
