Enterprise Version 2.0 idea

I was partially inspired by "The Beaver" doing his version of Enterprise, and thought I could do my own version. It would stray closer to the version we saw on-screen, but with a few noticeable differences:

Technology

-no transporter
-no holograms
-no cloaking devices. Ships might have small sensor profiles like our stealth today.
-no protein resequencer, which acted close to a replicator. We do have 3D printed food now, so some form of that wouldn't be too far-fetched. More cooked or dehydrated/frozen food that needs to be reheated.


Plot
-no Temporal Cold War, Xindi, or Suliban acting as agents of the future
-the Romulans are behind a number of plots and 'chess games' in the quadrant, unbeknownst to Enterprise which will lead directly to the Earth-Romulan War.


Crew
-roughly the same, but Malcolm is a MACO, and they join Enterprise from the outset. There is a human science officer, and T'Pol is more the diplomat/first contact specialist who assists the science officer when necessary. There is no Trip-T'Pol romance.


Aliens
-no Feregi, Borg, Klingons, or in-person encounters with Romulans or Romulan ships, show more Andorians, Tellaries, Vulcans, Orions and the like.


Any advice or recommendations for specific things to avoid or include?
 
Congratulations, you're smarter than most of Enterprise' writers already.

Small Changes I would make;

-Keep the transporter. Use it only half as often as they did.

-Keep the Klingons. I had an idea that something that happens at the end of the Earth-Romulan War creates major distrust leading to cold war for the next century and a half.

I had this idea that Earth got small amounts of help during the war from the other powers in the area (Vulcan reconnaissance, Andorian weapons smuggling, Tellarite supply smuggling, Klingon guerrilla attacks on their shared border with the Romulans). Once the war ended and the Federation was formed (I figured the Klingons were not invited to join) it would later become known that Starfleet found a prototype Romulan cloaking device and did not share this info with the Klingons. This would create major distrust between the two powers leading to the cold war state of affairs for the next 150(ish) years.
 
OK, I'll play.

1. All officers are human.
2. Captain Archer is not a dick.
3. Commander Tucker is chief engineer and second officer.
4. Reed is tactical officer.
5. Hoshi is Reed's wife. She is a medical assistant.
6. Phlox is a civilian doctor.
8. T'Pol is a civilian scientist.
7. Mayweather is security chief.
9. There is NO time travel.
10. The "universal translator" is supplied by the Vulcans. As are the star charts.
11. There is no transporter.
12. There is NO decon chamber.
13. Basic lasers as ship's weaponry.

You know that cool Enterprise-J from the 26th Century Archer takes a field trip to? Well the whole series is set on that, in that time.
 
Another thing I will be avoiding - in the series, Archer seems quite irritable and a bit demanding/childish at times, unlike Kirk, Picard, Sisko, or even Janeway. Just something in his tone of voice sounds like he's perpetually angry at everyone almost the entire episode.
 
Set about fifty years after Cockrane's first warp flight, delete the whole "Vulcan's held us back" nonsense. It's five years after the last Kzinti war.

Earth already has dozens of colonies, some of which are successful others not. Humans exploded out into the galaxy immediately after Cochrane's first flight. Plus Humans have immigrated and settled on the planets of other species. The "Boomer" cargo ships exist in the hundreds, Starfleet has forty or fifty starships.

The Enterprise isn't the first warp five ship, but it is the first entirely indigenious Human built warp five ship and a source of pride. Up until now Humans have been importing their starships. Make it tight inside, world war two submarine tight, people squeezing past each other.

Dump Archer in all but name. Make him a more realistic serious character, a veteran of the Kzinti war, this is his first command. He is a profession driven military type, young, brash, headstrong.

Some of Earth's nations are part of United Earth, others are part of the New United Nations. There are other international organizations as well. And there are private and corperate concerns too. They each have their own colonies and fleets and alien allies. There is competition to grow outwards, no one uses the phrase "empire building" but that's basically what it is.

It's very 15th through 18th century Earth.

Archer and his crew are part of this outward growth, there is a purpose to their missions. They're not simply aimlessly wandering around outer space.

Our heroes lose sometime, sometimes badly.

There is no section 31, or anything remotely like it.

T'Pol is very similar, however she isn't in the Enterprise's chain of command (regardless of her Vulcan rank) that never made any sense.

Mayweather is older, born in space before warp drive. Served aboard a dozen civilian ships, commanded a couple, served in the Kzinti war, multiple ex-wives and a grandfather too. A senior lieutenant now, he sometimes gets in Archer face with his greater experience.

Keep movie night.

The crew should have relationships, sex hook ups, marriages, friendships, enemies, problems.

T'Girl, quite a few good suggestions, thanks! I like Earth having lots of colonies, as that would provide a much larger base of humans to help explain their prevalence in the Original Series, and Next Generation. Perhaps some nations claim Minshara-class planets to conduct a form of 'revival' of their specific culture, free of external influence - like a Celtic colony world, with only Irish, Manx, Welsh, Scots Gaelic, and Breton spoken, or a Roman world, which could be the one revisited by Kirk in a TOS 2.0 later. That could prove interesting.

Movie night is still in, for sure. It's interesting for the reaction of any aliens on board to Earth movie culture, and is good for morale.

As for assignments, rather than wandering around, I can see what you mean when I think back that Archer really seemed to meander about a little. Any specific missions or episodes you think should stay, or go?
 
Additions:

- no holodecks, TNG stories, or old fart versions of Riker and Troi trying to be TNG-era versions.
- actually have a full 7 seasons so there can be a fair comparison to other "modern" Trek series.
 
I'd still have transporters but have them as a new experimental technology debut in series 5 or something and hardly ever used.

I'd start off with a human doctor but have it killed off and Phlox bought in later on, a few more changes like that through the series would be interesting. Its an exciting new phase in human history after all.
 
I liked the 3-episode arcs that were used in the final season. What I would have liked to see them do with it is introduce a Character in a minor role in the first part of an arc, possibly a guest actor as a previously unseen crewman. But he's kept in the background of the story. In part 2, he has a more significant role, though still not someone you'd be paying attention to. In part 3, the Character has become the primary threat and must be neutralized.
 
Drop Porthos. Nothing against the dog, but his mere presence on the ship is a constant reminder of how boneheaded Archer is. Even Janeway had sense enough to leave her dog behind.
 
Oh i don't know, dog in space was quite amusing and made the series stand out, it needed more of those things IMO
 
Technology:
I could accept transporter usage for non-organic material, so no beaming of people. Agree on no holograms and no cloaks (it was unknown technology in TOS). I don't mind the protein resequencer, it would be a way of recycling materials into something useful whilst on the move. No photonic torpedoes.

Plot:
Definately no TCW or Xindi. Adjust the Suliban to experiment with genetic engineering on their own (no future interference), as it was something that could have been looked at in more depth. Have the Romulans pulling a few strings, so long as they aren't seen on screen--ships and disembodied voices only.

Crew:
Keep Malcolm as Armoury Officer, but introduce a separate Security Chief/MACO Commander. Keep T'Pol as Science Officer, but with a more appropriate Vulcan look (black hair and no catsuit). Either give Travis more to say and do or have the role as just a recurring one. A first contact/diplomatic officer would be a sensible addition, they could act as a mentor to Hoshi. Make Archer a decent leader, also make him something other than American (New Zealander perhaps?). Drop Porthos. Keep Trip/T'Pol.

Aliens:
Absolutely no Ferengi, Borg or Klingons. Romulans are only ever in the shadows. More Federation species (I wanted to see the Deltans make an appearance). Drop the Orion female twist.

Drop the TCW. However I generally liked the Xindi arc (without the doppy side stories), cut it back to only six episodes.

Keep her in the Vulcan robes we first saw her in at the medical center, kind of a "Jedi Knight" look. And figure out what her eye brows are going to be.

Make Archer a decent leader, also make him something other than American (New Zealander perhaps?).

Make him an Arab, better still an Arab Jew.

I nominate a thirty-something Omar Sharif to play the part. Damn he was a good looking man.

I wouldn't mind having Omar Sharif or someone similar captaining a starship. That would be pretty cool I think.
