Enterprise transporter in TMP

Early in TMP the Enterprise transporter isn’t working so Kirk and Scotty have to board by shuttle. TOS has numerous examples of people beaming onto starships without using a transporter pad on the receiving end. So what’s the problem? With 20 hours of prep work to do and only 12 hours to do it, it doesn’t make sense to kill time by taking the scenic route unnecessarily.

It's been suggested that to save power that sometimes they link the receiving and departure transporters together, this is what they were doing in the movie when the transporter failed. Now, sure, once the transported messed up they could've just used the additional power to have the departure transporter "do all of the work" and simply bean Kirk and anyone else onto the Enterprise but they didn't because....

Ummmmm..... They really wanted to save power!

I much prefer TOS and TMP restrictions on transporting. As far as I'm concerned, distortions from warp drives make it trickier beaming onto starships without using the receiving pad, this was why they avoided intraship beaming in TOS (it makes more sense than the 'pinpoint accuracy' excuse). Thus it was a safety issue that went tits up when the receiving pad malfunctioned.

I would assume that this reason still wouldn't prevent it in TMP, since the ship was in drydock and the warp nacelles were likely not powered up.

Dunno though. Most of the ship's power comes from the anti-matter engines and they were probably testing the system. You've also got structural integrity fields, inertial dampening fields, and Rand's put on another pot of coffee. The possibilities for interference are endless!

Yeah, you're probably right. Obviously, there is a reason that they didn't use Starfleet transporters while the Enterprise's were on the blink.

Security? It's possible there are shields which prevent anyone beaming aboard a ship in the dock unless its own transporters are active as a security measure against sabotage. Why didn't Kirk beam to the drydock itself and board the Enterprise via the walkway connected to the saucer? Security screens.

I'd read that quite differently:

"Early in TMP the Enterprise transporter isn't working so Kirk beams up to Scotty's office and complains. The two then visit the construction site."

Kirk wasn't really interested in getting to the ship. Kirk was interested in getting the ship to work properly, so that he could take her to face V'Ger. That goal was better pursued by beaming up to Scotty's office than by beaming up to the dysfunctional starship.

Perhaps when you're working on the transporter it's not a good idea to be beaming into the area. Maybe testing the transporter systems involves powering up various components that could cause problems with incoming transporter beams. If they were in a hurry, the may have been cutting corners, doing things that aren't recommended in the manuals.

This actually makes perfect sense.

Though the real reason was so that Kirk and the audience could see the Enterprise in all her glory (still my favorite of all Enterprises--both exterior and interior).

Well yeah but it's nice to try and think of reasons why things happen. Another reason for the long fly over? Scotty was trying to keep Kirk out of everyone's way as long as possible. <grin>

Two reasons for the plot contrivance...
A) So Scotty and Kirk can beat off flying around the sexy refit.
B) Turning the original science officer into play-doh so they can
bring back Spock after his embarrassing Vulcan bar mitzvah.

Not to mention the transporter was still so
fucked up it gave Bones a big hillbilly beard !

They should leave the transporter on beardy setting all the time. Would keep kirk out of trouble with his female passengers.

Space is vast, life is diverse and plentiful. With all that traveling and adventuring, who's to say Kirk hadn't bedded a bearded lady by that point?

"Bridesmaid, love the beard - gives me something to hold onto..."

"Woof"....?

...Anyway

Consider the fact that the Phasers are tied into the Warp Drive, would it be too much of a leap to consider that the Transporters systems are tied into another system as well?
