The surface detailing/finish would be important, too...but not too much extraneous "junk". Think of something completely smooth like the C-57D from "Forbidden Planet." The Enterprise was supposed to have a sleek, smooth look as well. I don't like what they did to the model for the Trek 25th anniversary.

According to the articles I've read, the Smithsonian's recent analysis shows that the ship did originally have the same detailing seen in the 25th-anniversary restoration, just not nearly as heavily applied. It was there, but the loss of resolution from the optical compositing effects obscured it. Miarecki recreated the details accurately, but overestimated how vivid they would've originally been before that image degradation.

I saw it hanging in a doorway somewhere between 1982 and 1986. The people I was with were annoyed that I was so excited about seeing it. I was able to reach up and touch it. I couldn't resist! I shot most of a roll of film taking pics of it.

Years later, when I got married, my wife repurposed the box that I had all my photos in. I have never seen the photos since.

So a bit of behind-the-scenes... you've probably all seen the original roll out photo with the model builders standing behind the Enterprise. Think 1964. Think rolls of film (not digital). They didn't just take one picture - they used up the roll.

Re these pics - we REALLY need pics from when it was on display after the show, at "Space Week" at Golden West college. That's the missing timeframe. We actually have many pics during shooting (most of which are copywrite and cannot be released) but that timeframe, especially in color, would be most helpful.

That's the key point, which exposes the oft-stated, wrongheaded notion of not knowing how the model was detailed becuase "old TVs did not show the real details."

There are innumerable high resolution, 35mm photos of the model during production. More than memories of a TV broadcast, the 35mm photos (not to mention Richard Datin's comments) show the true look of the model, which also point how bad the 1991 restoration was.

Is there documentation somewhere of the modifications made to the model after the pilots? Such as what was done and when?

Holy moly! The latest Smithsonian blog post has a very interesting image. It's a collage of a number of other photos, and those photos are of the Enterprise right when it was first constructed back in 1964. Amazing! I'm a sucker for seeing the Enterprise fresh off the lot, so to speak. I hope we'll get to see these in greater detail at some later date. They also have a few photos of their forensic efforts on the paint.
