To be honest I kinda hope they do a new Five year voyage with Kirk and Crew. Make an actual reboot rather than a shoehorned Alternate Reality like the latest movies. It's time now I think. Discovery would be the jump off point. (The Picard show should remain in the original continuity)

What are you going to say when the Starfleet vessels in the Picard show aren't exact copies of TNG aesthetics?

If they were to do a Pike/Number One series, their "insurance" against the fact that part of the audience would always be looking ahead at Pike's expiration date would be that the same folks would be anticipating Kirk's eventual debut on the scene. In terms of keeping up publicity and audience interest in the show, some years into it, Kirk's inevitable introduction would be absolute gold.

God knows Warners got an awful lot out of longer build-ups and less pay-offf on Smallville and Gotham.

BTW. I was just looking at a transcript of "The Menagerie" - I long thought that Kirk said he met Pike when he took command of Enterprise.

He doesn't say that. He says that they met when Pike "was promoted to Fleet Captain."

It's not out of the realm of possibility that these two events occurred simultaneously.

ADMIRAL NOGURA: Captain Pike, I hereby promote you to the rank of Fleet Captain. Congratulations! [turns to former Commander Kirk] The Enterprise is now yours, Captain Kirk. By the way, do you guys know each other?

IDK - One assumes that the two happened around the same time (IE Pike promoted to Fleet Captain - and a desk job); and Pike thus hands Command of the 1701 to Kirk.

But yes, it's also possible Pike and Kirk met prior to Kirk being given Command of the 1701 too; and there could be months/years between the two occurrences.

Yet another aspect to 'wiggle around in' canon wise should they decide to do a 'Pike' series; or mention something in the 'Section 31' series. ;)

No, it's likely enough...which I guess is where the confusion may come from.

But it's not necessarily so.

Nor is it necessarily true that Kirk and Pike never met aside from that instance - it's only suggested that this is when they first met.

Given the tortured, literal way in which writers have repeatedly interpreted canon events in order to shoehorn stuff in, the new Star Trek could get away with having Kirk serve under Pike for some time if that's what they were determined to do.

They don't have to be....it's 20 years later...and for the 10th time I never said or think that the sets need to be identical to what came before.

Where is Nogura c. 2257, by the way?

And Stone, Mendez, Komack, Fitzgerald, and whichever other admirals-by-Kirk's-5YM I'm forgetting, for that matter?

For Picard Project purposes, I would expect some resemblance of some of the sets, standing or temporary, to what we've seen in TNG, DS9 and VOY. And I'd expect to see some of the ship designs from that timeframe survive into Picard's 2399-2400 AD present-day, as well.

According to this, they ran out of time to build a physical frame for the 'window' so it was made in CG.

He oversaw the refit program starting around 2270, still another 13 years until that gets going.

The final shot of the bridge gave us another nod to TOS

When Spock activates his console, one of this displays changes to the swirly black and white thing

For some reason, this moment out of all of them choked me up.
