Drewmax, I think you're utterly missing the point by going on a thread about a book just to say that they're non-canon and have no baring on the canon Trek. You may dislike them and chose to ignore them but:

1. Everybody knows the books aren't canon, yet 40 years later the books are still selling. Canon isn't everything.

2. George and Winona Kirk from STXI were based on characters from the old novels "Final Frontier" (nothing to do with STV) and "Best Destiny", which was also the basis for young Kirk's reckless behaviour. Not canon? Yes. An influence on canon? Yes.

There almost was a film about the Romulan War. It was called Star Trek: The Beginning and was about a hotshot United Earth Space Navy pilot named Tiberius Chase. The Beginning never came to fruition, so it has no bearing. It's worth raising the point about how I feel about Michael Martin's work however it is also paramount that I state the fact that the books are in no way canon and therefore affect my view on this particular subject. Those points you made about the books perhaps influencing the continuity is valid however writers of said canon seem to cherry pick for want of a better phrase the elements from non canonical sources and do whatever they see fit. Seems like the gods smile fondly upon some Trek literature.

Perhaps the Constitution class looks less advanced because the show was MADE IN THE 60S. I really hate it when people try and justify this in canon.

Like King Daniel I completely agree, there is no need for a canon explanation to why the Constitution differs in design from the NX class, it's just foolish. We should just accept that it was merely a design choice within continuity and that is that.
