Drewmax, I think you're utterly missing the point by going on a thread about a book just to say that they're non-canon and have no baring on the canon Trek. You may dislike them and chose to ignore them but:
1. Everybody knows the books aren't canon, yet 40 years later the books are still selling. Canon isn't everything.
2. George and Winona Kirk from STXI were based on characters from the old novels "Final Frontier" (nothing to do with STV) and "Best Destiny", which was also the basis for young Kirk's reckless behaviour. Not canon? Yes. An influence on canon? Yes.
There almost was a film about the Romulan War. It was called Star Trek: The Beginning and was about a hotshot United Earth Space Navy pilot named Tiberius Chase. The film was cancelled to make way for JJ's reboot. Look it up on Memory Alpha or go to www.aintitcool.com/node/34635 to read the story.
