Lieutenant Junior Grade

Just been playing around with this graphic as seen in Kirk's quarters in The Undiscovered Country, with a slight personal customisation.

The graphic I created above was copied from an original screen used back-lit that showed Scotty as Commander.

Of course, in the Voyage Home, Scotty wears Commander insignia instead of Captain, so mine is no precedent

You have to figure that as a costuming error, much like Valeris in Star Trek VI. Scotty was a captain in The Search for Spock and was a captain in The Final Frontier.

Since Scott didn't wear his standard duty uniform after his promotion in STIII until the end of STIV. Someone probably put the commanders rank pin with his uniform and forgot to switch it out.

According to MA - Scott relinquished his first officer duties as he preferred to remain hands on in engineering, this probably came with a grade reduction back to commander, which the uniform change shows.

After the launch of the Enterprise-B (still on Commander uniform) Scotty retires with the rank of Captain, thus boarding the Jenolen and makes his way to his retirement settlement.

But in the last two TOS films, he is clearly wearing Captain's bars.

No, Scotty clearly had captain's rank on the Enterprise-B, too.

TVH is really the only anomaly here.

(When looking for a GEN screencap to use, I saw something I never noticed before... there is a flag officer present on the Enterprise-B bridge. In-universe, I wonder why she didn't start giving orders, or at least input, when the crisis started. (Out-of-universe, I understand that it's because she's just a background extra.)

She's from Supply, like Everett McGill's Major Powers character in Heartbreak Ridge.

Colonel Meyers: Are you new to the infantry, Major?
Maj. Malcolm A. Powers: Yes, sir. Just came over from supply.
Colonel Meyers: Were you good at that?
Maj. Malcolm A. Powers: Yes, sir!
Colonel Meyers: Well then, stick to it because you're a walking cluster fuck as an infantry officer. My men are hard chargers, Major! Leutenant Ring and Gunny Highway took a handfull of young fire pissers, exercised some personal initiative and kicked ass!

Love this movie!
