Image is from the Oct 1977 issue of "Popular Science" (complete with address label, lol). I don't know if that's some type of prototype pictured, but none of the other images of actual PETs that I saw had the keyboard area coloured black.

1977: Work began on Star Trek: Phase II, a live-action sequel to Star Trek and planned flagship program of Paramount's new TV network. But the new network fell through, and in October of the same year, Paramount upgraded the Star Trek project to a theatrical movie... largely because of the success of Star Wars.

The American mini-series Roots premieres on the telly-telly bunkum box. It's quite popular.
