I think its time to give some recognition to the people behind the heroes. Many of the great heroes don't just fight alone, they have their friends and compatriots. These people might not get the limelight very often, but their presence is frequently essential to the heroes.
The sidekicks can be from anything. Not just the young wards of superheroes. Any person who is a friend/helper/student/etc of another character in any media (comics, tv/movies, video games, etc). It doesn't even need to be the sidekick of a heroic character, that's just where sidekicks are more commonly found.
