Ent 3.9 - North Star

Thorius

Ensign
Red Shirt
I just had to say I particularly enjoyed this episode. Some episodes of Enterprise haven't struck me as that engaging, but somehow, a story about a group of humans who were kidnapped from Earth and followed a different cultural, err, "evolution", just seemed quite good. Just thought I'd jump on here to compliment the people involved with the show for a particularly good episode (not that any of them are ever likely to read this, but, hey, never know).

I also liked North Star but I didn't care much for where it landed in the season's schedule. Archer and Co. are on an urgent mission to find aliens who attacked Earth and planned to finish the job.

In the episode The Xindi, Archer bites Reed's head off for suggesting they proceed with caution because a source of information on the Xindi wasn't trustworthy.
And here we are, spending a few days orbiting a planet where abducted humans are living. They've been there for decades and weren't going anywhere. So Archer decided to stick his nose where there no signs of the enemy.

North Star along with Impulse are my favorites from season three.

I loved North Star. It could have been terrible.. the wild west is terrible by definition when you inject it into sci fi, same as the Nazi's. And yet sometimes it works and works wonderfully. Visually very nice to look at with the sepia effect in some scenes.

T'Pol looks great in that head kerchief too!

Always loved this pic..

And on the set:

It's definitely a fun episode, but I would have rather had it in Season Four. In fact, can we drop "Daedalus" and pretend "North Star" happened in its place? :p

I adore "North Star." Absolutely adore it. The washed-out sepia, the costumes, the location shooting on Universal's Western streets, the guest cast, the fabulous direction, the intriguing setup of aliens kidnapping a wagon train from the Old West and then the tables being turned on them, the thematic echoes about slavery and prejudice.

I didn't mind that it came in the middle of the Xindi arc. Even in wartime, if Archer comes across several thousand humans light years from where any human has ever been, he's going to go take a look. Works for me.

If you have the DVDs, listen to the commentary by the 1st AD, Mike DeMerrit. Wonderful stuff.

David Goodman (who wrote the episode) has been known to pop in here every now and then. You never know. :)

As to the interruption, yeah it doesn't work IMHO when the fate of Earth is at stake. However at least they didn't interrupt the Xindi arc with a holodeck episode. And it's a great episode :)

I try and pretend the Xindi arc never happened. All the ones I like in the season (North Star, Carpenter St, E2, Twilight) take you out of it.

This is what I don't get?.

six shooters, and repeating rifles against phased energy weapons and body armour, but still those macos took losses. Hell, Archer got hit in the leg...

Remember when T'Pol said "Let's transport stun grenades in first to pacify resistance before we put boots on the ground." in Terra Nova to deal with the insidious threat of Ma Kent?

Advanced combat training my ass.

^ Okay, so "North Star" doesn't work for everybody. I still love it. :) (And Archer got hit in the shoulder.)

I'm currently watching Glenn Morshower (Sheriff MacReady) as a Secret Service agent on 24. (Please don't spoil me! I'm only in the middle of Season 3.) He's been in, well, everything. He had a great look in this episode.

I actually only saw this for the first time last year, and it blew me away. They really captured the fun and spirit of the "western" genre. On a technical level it was beautiful as well. One of my favorites of the series, but I can see how it may not be well suited to the tastes of some who watched the show.

I liked North star and the way it was filmed looks like an ole wetern movie.I liked the western costumes they wore in this show.

At least Tucker felt at home among the rednecks.

I don't remember this episode to be particular good. I've never rewatched it though and my memories are vague. I do remember the humans on that planet to be particularly closed-minded which annoyed me. I think I had expected a Wild West episode to take itself a little less serious.

All in all, I guess the whole Wild Western thing felt a bit too TNG-y to me. Also, the story about people being kidnapped from earth had already been told on VOY.
