What we do in C programming is prefix it with an exclamation point. So !Spock is interpreted by the compiler as "not your father's Spock."

Uhh, well, the name "Kirk" is closer to the name "Kirk", than it is to say, the names "Picard", or "Sisko", or "Janeway", or even "Archer". It's the only one comprised of the same amount of letters, the same proportion of consonants and vowels, arranged in precisely the same order.

Aw, I see "nuTrek" or "NuTrek" as an affectionate, yet simple, way of being clear as to what you're talking about. Not only that, but I think for many people, myself included, if you talk about Kirk or Spock or anyone like that, their minds immediately go to TOS.
Wouldn't urTrek be Forbidden Planet, though? We should call the old one urTrek![]()
I agree this is more star trek then any other , and i mean it by the way the charactors look and react to things ,makes me feel i'm like watching TOS. TO me its back to basic's good old trek ,you have to look at the bigger picture and that is star trek is back with a bang .So j.j changed the look of the ship , what director would not want to update things alittle, so they changed the timeline ,but at the core of this film is star trek and a better future where we can work and live in harmony.Thats just my viewThe following is, of course, my own opinion and I hardly expect anyone to change the way they reference Star Trek or anything related as a result of this rant but I'm gonna put it out there anyway
I'm sick of 'JJ-this' 'nu-that'
it's 'Star Trek' not JJ-Trek or nuTrek or the JJprise or nuEnterprise
Star Trek is Star Trek and the Enterprise is the Enterprise
in my opinion, all the appellations meant to differentiate the 11th film from the rest for clarity of discussion are convenient but they are at the same time quite annoying
to me, calling it JJ Trek or nuTrek or whatever pushes it down a notch like it's not good enough to be called Star Trek
Star Trek is alive and is closer to The Original Series than anything since The Original Series, so I feel that calling it anything other than Star Trek (or Star Trek XI or STXI for clarity) lessens the spirit of it . . .
this is obviously the wrong analogy to use but it's like the Disciples calling Jesus after the Resurrection 'nuJesus'
like I said . . . horrible analogy, but I hope my point was successfully communicated

Backstept, you have a better way to distinguish between two separate timelines in shorthand? Ye Olde Star Trek vs. Star Trek 2.0?
Oh-oh, now ITL's going to have to do up a forum banner, or something, right?Just put on a sombrero, light up a toke and chill in the 420-Verse Movie XI Boards.
That is what this subforum is, right?

1. This is the first Trek since TOS to be set in the TOS timeframe.
^^ Acutally it's set in an alternative timeline.
2. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters as merely a particularly talented starship crew, rather than the larger-than-life legends they became by the time of the movie era.
^^ Really no larger-than-life legends? Scotty can beam people across the galaxy, Chekov is a teenage Whiz kid dare I say 'Wesley Crusher' he can even transport people freefalling (except poor Spock's mom), I lost count how many languages and dialects Uhura can translate
3. This is the first Trek since TOS to show the TOS crew at their original TOS ranks.
^^ I don't think so, Captain Spock.
4. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters similar to how they were in TOS, rather than showing them a decade or two later, often in a story expressly about how they're growing old and are not the young heroes of TOS anymore.
^^Must be nice to be young.
5. This is the first Trek since TOS where Chekov was the navigator of the Enterprise NCC-1701.
^^ I thought he spent a lot of time in the transporter room.
6. This is the first Trek since TOS to have a love interest for Spock. (Unless you count Saavik in ST3.)
^^ This love interest mde no sense and showed Spock without control of his emotions completely altered his character as defined in TOS and the movies.
7. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature a full rendition of the original TOS theme music.
^^ Yeah right at the very very end of the film, it was a cheap add on that did not fit well with the rest of the new musical score.
8. This is the first Trek since TOS to show Captain Pike, to show Captain Pike commanding the Enterprise, to show Spock serving under Captain Pike.
^^ In the episode the Meangerie stardate 3012.4 it was revealed that a young Spock was serving under the command of Captain Christopher Pike some 13 years earlier.
Timeframe. There's a difference, and his statement is not incorrect.FailledLurker to answer your questions
^^ Acutally it's set in an alternative timeline.1. This is the first Trek since TOS to be set in the TOS timeframe.
Scotty was always shown as being capable and an innovator. Chekov does come off a little changed, but is mainly an update. Uhura's exactly what you'd want a linguistics and communications officer to be. They're a particularly talented crew, as stated.^^ Really no larger-than-life legends? Scotty can beam people across the galaxy, Chekov is a teenage Whiz kid dare I say 'Wesley Crusher' he can even transport people freefalling (except poor Spock's mom), I lost count how many languages and dialects Uhura can translate2. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters as merely a particularly talented starship crew, rather than the larger-than-life legends they became by the time of the movie era.
You don't? Won't you please elaborate?^^ I don't think so, Captain Spock.3. This is the first Trek since TOS to show the TOS crew at their original TOS ranks.
This is a non sequitur.^^Must be nice to be young.4. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters similar to how they were in TOS, rather than showing them a decade or two later, often in a story expressly about how they're growing old and are not the young heroes of TOS anymore.
How much time? He ran down to save Kirk's and Sulu's bacon when the duty transporter officer was unable to get a lock. The transport from Vulcan's surface happened immediately afterward. He may have been there for no more than a couple of minutes.^^ I thought he spent a lot of time in the transporter room.5. This is the first Trek since TOS where Chekov was the navigator of the Enterprise NCC-1701.
That's not an argument, merely an opinion.^^ This love interest mde no sense and showed Spock without control of his emotions completely altered his character as defined in TOS and the movies.6. This is the first Trek since TOS to have a love interest for Spock. (Unless you count Saavik in ST3.)
Another opinion, and no more.^^ Yeah right at the very very end of the film, it was a cheap add on that did not fit well with the rest of the new musical score.7. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature a full rendition of the original TOS theme music.
Read again the words which I've underlined. Your point is no point.^^ In the episode the Meangerie stardate 3012.4 it was revealed that a young Spock was serving under the command of Captain Christopher Pike some 13 years earlier.8. This is the first Trek since TOS to show Captain Pike, to show Captain Pike commanding the Enterprise, to show Spock serving under Captain Pike.

This post was made in answer to Jeyl's question, and posed as a series of statements. That you responded as if you were answering questions asked by FailedLurker and that your "answers" read as they do make me wonder just what it was you thought you were about with your response.Let me count the ways:How was it closer to the original series than any other trek production again?

I think that's enough to start with.
NuTrek/JJs Star Trek you bet and here's why...
1. Why completely change Spock's character?
2. Why change the original starship Enterprise when its such a classic?
3. What the hell were they thinking with the Engine Room?
4. Why destroy Vulcan?
5. JJ didn't want to make a 'Galaxy Quest' but the film is full of stupid humor.
6. Why does Scotty needy a cuddly friend?
7. Why is Sulu such a dork who can't pilot a ship?
8. If the crew are starfleet cadets, where is Gary Mitchell?
9. Why change the musical score?
10. Why change stardates?
11. Why is Sick Bay now Medical Bay?
12. Why the hell is Kirk driving stick shift cars and motorcycles?
13. Why does everyone talk as if their 13 years old?
14. Most importantly, why such a bad script!
Well, if all it takes to make a good Star Trek story is just to have the names of the original characters, bravo. God forbid you like a Star Trek story that actually involves some shed of creativity and not wall-to-wall homages, references and cliche plot devices.
It takes more to make a good movie than getting the names right.
As shown with the mirror universe, in Trek alternate timelines do not automatically mean different times.FailledLurker to answer your questions
1. This is the first Trek since TOS to be set in the TOS timeframe.
^^ Acutally it's set in an alternative timeline.
You've described some of their talents, things that may be the beginnings of building a reputation equal to what the movie-era TOS crew had.2.
Acting captain Spock. Spock was left in command when the captain left the ship in TOS as well. But his rank, in this movie and in most of TOS, was Commander.3. This is the first Trek since TOS to show the TOS crew at their original TOS ranks.
^^ I don't think so, Captain Spock.
As I remember, it is nice to be young, but what does that have to do with what I said about the differences between the young TOS crew of the series Star Trek and the movie Star trek and the older crew of the TOS movies?4. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters similar to how they were in TOS, rather than showing them a decade or two later, often in a story expressly about how they're growing old and are not the young heroes of TOS anymore.
^^Must be nice to be young.
I'm sure he spent some time in the bathroom too, what's your point?5. This is the first Trek since TOS where Chekov was the navigator of the Enterprise NCC-1701.
^^ I thought he spent a lot of time in the transporter room.
I thought you just pointed out that this is an alternate timeline? So of what relevence is his characterization in the prime timeline?6. This is the first Trek since TOS to have a love interest for Spock. (Unless you count Saavik in ST3.)
^^ This love interest mde no sense and showed Spock without control of his emotions completely altered his character as defined in TOS and the movies.
Personally I thought it was appropriate to sqave the original theme for the end, after the full TOS crew was officially in place. But even if it was a cheap add-on, it was the full theme, even the fanfare at the end, for the first time since Turnabout Intruder.7. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature a full rendition of the original TOS theme music.
^^ Yeah right at the very very end of the film, it was a cheap add on that did not fit well with the rest of the new musical score.
Yes. That was in TOS. This movie shows Pike for the first time since then.8.
Well, they didn't completely change his character - He's still half Vulcan half human, still the child of Ambassador Sarek and Amanda Grayson, was still looked down upon by other Vulcans for his mixed parentage, still spurned the VSA in favor of Starfleet, still struggles with his dual heritage. As for what changes they did make, why go to the trouble of making an alternate timeline if everything's going to be the same?1. Why completely change Spock's character?
"I know engineers. They love to change things!" The new ship also a handy visual cue that this is a different timeline.2. Why change the original starship Enterprise when its such a classic?
I think they were thinking something along the lines of Let's make it look like an engine room.3. What the hell were they thinking with the Engine Room?
It's a fairly dramatic moment in and of itself. It also helps establish just how much of a threat Nero is. It also creates story possibilities and character motivation for Spock. It also creates story possibilities in general, if they revisit the surviving Vulcans in later movies. It also tells fans that anything is possible in this alternate timeline.4. Why destroy Vulcan?
That one's more of an assertion rather than a question, (actually several assertions,) but I will say that I don't agree that the humor is stupid, nor that it fills the movie.5. JJ didn't want to make a 'Galaxy Quest' but the film is full of stupid humor.
Don't we all need a cuddly friend? Also, I don't think Keenser looked all that cuddly.6. Why does Scotty needy a cuddly friend?
Sulu showed himself to be a very good pilot, both in avoiding the debris over Vulcan and in the maneuver over Titan. He was just unfamiliar with the launch procedures for this new starship, apparently.7. Why is Sulu such a dork who can't pilot a ship?
Assuming he exists in this alternate timeline and went to Starfleet Academy at the same time he did in the Prime timeline, probably in the Laurentian system.8. If the crew are starfleet cadets, where is Gary Mitchell?
Um, change it from what? In the six TOS movies they used four different composers, none of whom worked on the TOS, and the man most often associated with Trek music, Jerry Goldsmith, is dead.9. Why change the musical score?
To make them meaningful to the audience. Stardates were originally used to avoid specifying exactly when TOS took place. Now the goal of the filmmakers is for the audience to know when things are taking place, so the intentionally meaningless stardates have been replaced with easily understood stardates.10. Why change stardates?
Not sure on that one. Could it be related to some change in terminology in the US navy since the 60s, like the elimination of the Commodore rank? IIRC medical facilities on the Defiant were also called medical bay and not sickbay.11. Why is Sick Bay now Medical Bay?
He drives the car because he stole it to get back at his stepfather, and he rides the motorcycle because 1. he needs some kind of vehicle to get around, and 2. motorcycles are cool, even in the 23rd century.12. Why the hell is Kirk driving stick shift cars and motorcycles?
Hard to say, as I can't think of anyone in the movie who talks like they're 13 years old. Can you give me some examples?13. Why does everyone talk as if their 13 years old?
I think the script has proven to be pretty good. The movie made from it has broken all records for Trek movies, and rescued the franchise from the deathblows dealt by Enterprise and Nemesis. What's a convoluted time-travel plot next to accomplishments like that?14. Most importantly, why such a bad script!
