Enough of this 'nuJJ' stuff . . .

The following is, of course, my own opinion and I hardly expect anyone to change the way they reference Star Trek or anything related as a result of this rant but I'm gonna put it out there anyway :D

I'm sick of 'JJ-this' 'nu-that'
it's 'Star Trek' not JJ-Trek or nuTrek or the JJprise or nuEnterprise

Star Trek is Star Trek and the Enterprise is the Enterprise

in my opinion, all the appellations meant to differentiate the 11th film from the rest for clarity of discussion are convenient but they are at the same time quite annoying
to me, calling it JJ Trek or nuTrek or whatever pushes it down a notch like it's not good enough to be called Star Trek

Star Trek is alive and is closer to The Original Series than anything since The Original Series, so I feel that calling it anything other than Star Trek (or Star Trek XI or STXI for clarity) lessens the spirit of it . . .
this is obviously the wrong analogy to use but it's like the Disciples calling Jesus after the Resurrection 'nuJesus'
like I said . . . horrible analogy, but I hope my point was successfully communicated :D

How was it closer to the original series than any other trek production again?

How was it closer to the original series than any other trek production again?

Because it's actually entertaining.

Now that that's cleared up once and for all...

JJTrek, JJPrise and so forth are humorous appellations and there's no harm done IMAO. This is the only version of Star Trek that will be produced any more, so the usage will fade away with time.

and before someone takes me too seriously . . . just don't
this was just meant to be a silly poke at something I thought was annoying :D

Uhh, well, the name "Kirk" is closer to the name "Kirk", than it is to say, the names "Picard", or "Sisko", or "Janeway", or even "Archer". It's the only one comprised of the same amount of letters, the same proportion of consonants and vowels, arranged in precisely the same order.

Likewise, "Spock" is closer to "Spock" than it is to "Data", or "Whoever the fuck was second-billed on DS9", or "Seven of Rack", or even "T'Boobies".

Shall I go on to the names of the doctors as well, or the parentage of characters, or ship's registry numbers, or have you begun to notice a freakin' pattern yet?

backstept, does it bother you when nu- is attached to a character for the sake of clarity? ie: nuKirk?

If so, do you have a recommendation to distinguish between the characters in TOS versus their counterparts in the new movie? I think people use nu- because it's so brief and to the point. Don't feel bad though... I sometimes find myself grinding my teeth over little things that would probably not bother anyone else. :)

Yeah, I myself use it for its conciseness. It's easier to type "NuEnterprise" than it is to type "Enterprise (Star Trek, 2009)".

That was the original intention, I think. It was a way for the self-identified purists to show that this Trek was something different from their Trek. Of course, that didn't last long, and a lot of people with more favorable views adopted it as a sort of shorthand, making if simultaneously slightly annoying and extremely convenient for distinguishing the movie (and its makers) from That Which Came Before.

I'm pretty much in agreement, but 'nuJesus' ... heh. Heh heh heh.

Let me count the ways:

1. This is the first Trek since TOS to be set in the TOS timeframe.
2. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters as merely a particularly talented starship crew, rather than the larger-than-life legends they became by the time of the movie era.
3. This is the first Trek since TOS to show the TOS crew at their original TOS ranks.
4. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature the TOS characters similar to how they were in TOS, rather than showing them a decade or two later, often in a story expressly about how they're growing old and are not the young heroes of TOS anymore.
5. This is the first Trek since TOS where Chekov was the navigator of the Enterprise NCC-1701.
6. This is the first Trek since TOS to have a love interest for Spock. (Unless you count Saavik in ST3.)
7. This is the first Trek since TOS to feature a full rendition of the original TOS theme music.
8. This is the first Trek since TOS to show Captain Pike, to show Captain Pike commanding the Enterprise, to show Spock serving under Captain Pike.

I think that's enough to start with.

LOL! OK, I almost bit. I was about to post something to the affect of:

It IS different, how do you propose to differentiate between the two? ZeTrek?

We must now refer to him as ZeKirk. :)

Aw, I see "nuTrek" or "NuTrek" as an affectionate, yet simple, way of being clear as to what you're talking about. Not only that, but I think for many people, myself included, if you talk about Kirk or Spock or anyone like that, their minds immediately go to TOS.

For instance, if you said, "Spock is smart." My mind immediately jumps to Nimoy's Spock. But if you said, "NuSpock is smart." I know exactly who you're speaking about.

So, if you were just introduced to Trek with the movie, I could see how it would be annoying. I say it's all about mindset.

this is obviously the wrong analogy to use but it's like the Disciples calling Jesus after the Resurrection 'nuJesus'
I am totally going to start using this. :techman:

Backstept, you have a better way to distinguish between two separate timelines in shorthand? Ye Olde Star Trek vs. Star Trek 2.0?

Just put on a sombrero, light up a toke and chill in the 420-Verse Movie XI Boards.

That is what this subforum is, right?
