English, the Language.

I was not inferring that you are going to have an unpleasant time on TBBS. I'm stating that I think you are going to have an unpleasant time on TBBS. And if you don't, the rest of us probably will. You seem to have a knack for rubbing people the wrong way, then being surprised by it, then feeling the victim.

Yes, your tenure here will be unpleasant, either for you, or for those who have to put up with you.

Who said you broke a rule?

I predict that your tenure here is going to be mildly unpleasant. For lots of people. :S

Whether intended or not, I find your interventions both disingenous and sinister. As well as well the false contrition of "who said you broke a rule". The expression: " I predict that your tenure here is going to be mildly unpleasant" is threatening, inferring that I will have not a pleasant time on trekbbs (well, as long at least I keep away from aholes like you). You know what: frakk you. Will still have fun here. So frakk you again.
Dude, it's just some friendly advice. You seem to be taking this far more seriously than the situations warrants.

Wow....you're STATING repeat, STATING - your words (not inferring) I'm going to have an unpleasant time? What are you? God? Q?

As far as I'm aware I'm going to have a perfectly peachy lovely-dovey time as long as a-holes like you do not stray beyond the borders of the Misc thread into areas I genuinely love and admire.

i can only say i am horrified by the crazy ideas people have for how to say stuff in America.

mary and marry do not sound alike and nor does murray!

damn colonials can't talk properly.

It becomes more and more obvious, I'm afraid.

Dude, relax. Chaos is right; if you keep up the bizarrely defensive attitude, you're going to find it hard to get along well with people here. I'm not attacking you, just saying you might want to take a step back and reevaluate the way you've been acting in this thread. Otherwise, you're not doing yourself any favours.

Some of my favourite words are words like dem, demma. (Meaning Them/Those/They are...)

I like stuff like that.

Well, Murray is definitely different from Mary and marry, but I don't see how Mary and Marry are supposed to be different from each other. But then, we've already done that topic.

Yup, Mary, Marry and Merry, all different. :)

'Now there's something I never thought I'd say.'

We have a great english expression: I don't know you from Adam. I've already had a sense from forum of individuals drawn towards and so far having a great time, thank you. I feel I'm being threatened with some sort of ostracism - the great and the good/intellectual won't deign to talk to me. But you know what... I don't care. Nor would Kirk (joke). I will engage with anyone who will, despite threat or malice. Otherwise no reason I feel should toe any kind of party line. There's plenty here I enjoy and appreciate. I HATE to say this but in situations like this you people remind me of the worst excesses of totalitarian regimes. I appreciate it's "friendly" advice but it comes across to me as "you're new...don't rock the boat, your elder wiser and betters". Wtf gives you the right to dictate or even inform? A private pm I can RESPECT....but to make it open smacks of cowardice.

So let's (boringly) get to nub of my "crime":
I said: "herb" is correct spelling and pronunciation of word. But conceded may be regional/dialect pronunication of "herb" as "erb"

That's it...

It wasn't so much the "what" as the "how". No one cared that you thought that "herb" was "more right". It was a very confrontational, snobby, "I'm right, you're stupid" fashion of addressing the issue that got everyone's back up.

The fact that you don't get that fact is also a contentious point.

You keep doing it, getting defensive and insisting that RP pronunciation (a regional dialect arbitrarily chosen and codified) is 'correct English' which it isn't. You got ridiculously defensive and are keeping on so. It isn't an endearing habit anywhere.

Kodos...I have been defensive at times and this NOWHERE near defensive. To paraphrase a certain comic book character: " you don't want to see me when I'm defensive" . My genuine, open advice? Back off or PM me. Attacking me publicly (which is what you're doing despite protestations) sustains this internecine farrago.

I'm sorry the conversation isn't going the way you want it to, and telling folks to back off because so just makes it worse. I never attacked you, I disagreed with you. You should take Canadave's advice. You're gonna have a stroke one of these days.

The word association thread in the red shirts' lounge has reminded me of another bizarre (to me :D) difference in pronunciation between Britain and America - "herb"

The British pronounce the 'h', the Americans don't and it really sounds weird to me as a Brit to hear 'erb (it really stands out when it's Beverly Crusher speaking )
Well, not all Brits. We Yorkshire folk drop our "h"'s all over the place. :D

It does sound strange to me to hear some Americans dropping the "h" in "herb" (while really stressing the "e") when they don't drop it for other "h" words.
Makes me want to yell "stop dropping your aitches"! Then I realise that I'm channelling my Primary school teachers.

THis whoe discussion reminds me of when 2 of my sons did their "G'day USA" School Cultural Exchange tours. The the kids at the school my number 2 son visited in Seattle state thought he was English. Son number 3 played up his Steve Urwin impersonation with the people he visited & host family in San Diego.
