Actually, the Bridget Loves Bernie reference is kind of appropriate. That show, with an explicit plot about a "mixed marriage," didn't last whereas Bewitched, which used metaphor, did.
^Well, one can question whether Bewitched really lasted, because the intent to use it as a metaphor for social commentary didn't last beyond the first season. For most of the show's run, it was just about gimmicks and wacky situations with no deeper meaning.
Yes, the show was first and foremost a sitcom, but the ongoing "mixed marriage" plots never really went away, especially insofar as they still had the issues with, first, Tabitha and then Adam on how to raise the kids.
