Just watched this movie first time and recommend it.
Based on a true story, originally released in 1987. This was directed
by Spielberg and featuring Christian Bale.
The story revolves around a young teen who lives in
Shanghai and gets caught up in the China/Japan war prior
to Pearl Harbor till the end of the WWII. First major movie
to be filmed in Shanghai. I was impressed with how the movie
unfolded. John Malcovich, Joe Pantoliano (Cyper in Matrix),
and a young Ben Stiller is in it.
 
One of my all-time favorites. :techman:

It was the first movie I ever bought on DVD.

Embarrassingly enough, I didn't make the Bale connection until sometime after BB came out.
 
I loved it too. The young Christian Bale was really impressive in that film. I was glad to see he continued acting several years later. :D
 
A personal favorite. When Bale is trying to revive the Japanese boy and he loses it and it becomes him trying to turn back the clock and revive his childhood...my god I cried.
 
I'm the only one in my family who loves this movie. My mom and I usually have the same taste, but she hates this movie. And I can't understand why.
 
I don't think I have ever seen this movie but it sounds interesting so I just added it to my Netflix! Thanks for the info on it!
 
I remember seeing this when it first came out. I loved it. I still have the soundtrack on cassette!
 
I want to thank the original poster for making this thread. I had never even heard of Empire of the Sun until reading this thread. I rented it and watched it for the first time last night and I was amazed by how good it was. It was an incredible and powerful film from start to finish. I don't know why it does not get more recognition.

My bet is that it's simply atypical of Spielberg of the time. People where expecting something else, and thus it never gained the immediate recognition it deserves.

Actually, it's probably more to do with coming out around the same time as "The Last Emperor", an epic film which also covered this time period, and simply overshadowed "Empire" with it epic-ness.
