Now that I've figured out that Lea Michele plays Rachel, yall will be amused to learn she's the apparent fan favorite to play The Wicked Witch of the West.

I genuinely like the idea of having her cast opposite Amanda Seyfried as Glinda. I'd watch that flick.

She's actually voicing Dorothy in an upcoming Oz animated film.

But I'm not surprised that she's being suggested to play Elphaba, given that she's basically Idina Menzel's double (to the extent that the show cast Menzel as her bio-mom).

SF needs to come up to the level of the shows that do get nominated. Caprica might have a shot someday if they keep improving. Anyway if True Blood can get nominated, an SF show along the same lines should have a chance.

The truth is, as I said before, the Academy is made up of people who know nothing about the SF genre, , and only want to know about one part of fiction rather than all of it, a result of and mirror of society's similar treatment of the genre's literary counterpart in schools and universities. What the Academy needs is a dedicated group of people, paid staff who know about all of fiction so that all shows in all genres can be nominated and win, including the actors (imagine if Andrew Robinson was nominated and won for his role as Garak in DS9? Or Andreas Katsulas for his role as G'kar on Babylon 5? That's what I'd like to see in the future-remember, it takes more acting, not less, to portray somebody under makeup.) When the Academy can do that, then I'll watch the awards; until then, it can fuck off.

Nobody needs to know anything about sci fi to realize that Andrew Robinson and Andreas Katsulas are fine actors. Their crime was being on shows in a genre that the mainstream of Hollywood find embarrassing and un-cool. (Not that this is the least bit relevant since DS9 and B5 do not qualify for this year's nominations.) To break through, a sci fi show needs to have that cool factor. It's not fair, but who ever said the Emmys are fair?

The sf shows on TV nowadays are just a pack of junk. None of them deserve to be nominated (except maybe Caprica, if it keeps on its current trajectory). What would you see nominated? V? Eureka? Warehouse 13? Flash Forward? SGU? Heroes?

I don't have much respect for the Emmys either, but to overcome the mega-stigma of sf/f, shows need to do what True Blood has, and get a lot of insider buzz. That's what poor BSG never had - and despite all its flaws, it deserved more Emmy love than it got. It was too much of an outsider.

LOST has always gotten lots of Emmy love. Of course the writers were careful not to bring up time travel until season five. By then, it was too late for the show to be ignored because it was Sci Fi.

Heroes got a fair bit of Emmy love in its first season too. And I believe S7 of TNG got a nom for best drama series back in '94, no? Agreed that on the whole, there's not much attention paid to the genre (BSG definitely did deserve more than it got - especially some acting noms for Mary McDonnell), but it's not a blanket snub.

Yeah, I agree. After all, look at how well Lost has done with the Emmys. You just need two things, a) enough insider buzz that you're not embarassing to vote for and b) to be good enough that you remotely deserve a nomination.

Forget a), we don't even have b) nowadays. The only candidate on the horizon is Terra Nova. If Speilberg can't get insider buzz, then I give up.

I don't think it's sci fi per se that's the problem. Just look at the very worthy Sons of Anarchy and the way that's been snubbed. It's an outsider show like BSG was. I have no idea how these things are decided, but some shows do seem to be on the outs with the Emmy establishment.

But in this thread people have been calling Rachel a bitch, and if Temis thought Elphaba in Wicked was like the witch in Oz I didn't want that to color her view of why Lea Michele would be a good fit for the part.

It's not just SF. Homicide: LOTS, for instance, constantly got snubbed in best drama series category, and many thought it was because it was shot in Baltimore (and it was also not a ratings hit). Since The Wire did even worse, there seems to be some merit in this.

I'd guess True Blood's nomination in spite of being a genre show was probably helped by the following factoids:

1. It's helmed by Alan Ball, who's got an Academy and Emmy or two to his name.
2. It's doing pretty well as far as cable viewership goes. I've heard it's HBO's biggest show post-Sopranos, but damned if I'd know that for certain.

Now, if Alan Ball was making a successful show about southern robot sex instead of southern vampire sex, maybe that'd get the nod.

That, and other reasons, is why I hate the Academy, and wish that it would die as well. And why I rarely watch any of the shows nominated or listen to the critics who cream their pants writing about, and for, them.

With the exception of Heroes, all of the rest you mentioned are no worse than shit like Sex In The City, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc-I'd stack them up, and past ones like Babylon 5, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Space Above And Beyond, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly against half of the mundane crap shows given Emmys most of the time. A true artistic academy would do that, but this Academy isn't really one so much as it is a cabal of PR flacks and greedy motherfuckers who don't really care about art, like most of the people in charge of most media companies in the U.S.A and Canada, and most of the Sundance Film Festival, indie-addicted kitchen sink-loving snobs that review movies and TV in the U.S.A and Canada.

I don't think he will win but he is a great singer and actor. I loved his performance of Rose's Turn.
