Ellen being gay hurt 'Idol' ratings

It wouldn't surprise me. Christians are in a state of mind where anything that can be used to discredit gays must be used even in the face of logic that suggests otherwise. It's pathetic.

As a Christian, I can say this is not the case.

BTW, I watched every episode of this seasons American Idol. I was rooting for Lee to win, cause I think he fits Idol better, whereas Crystal is more of an actual artist/singer/songwriter, if she had won Idol it would have compromised who she is as an artist, I think she'll have great success thanks to the attention Idol gave her though.

I would think the fact that it's one of the most unwatchable pieces of shit in TV history would hurt ratings more than a gay judge.
Its people singing. I seen shows a lot more unwatchable.

If it were just people singing I probably still wouldn't watch it but at least it wouldn't be the intellectually offensive piece of garbage that it is.

The entire thing is so transparently calculated and base that I'm amazed people don't feel totally pandered to when watching it.

I've had to sit through it in the past and my fucking skin crawled. It's not that it sucks (which it does) it's that it thinks you, the viewer, are a retard and almost mocks you for watching it.
From watching the show I think the format is: People sing. Judges critique them. The audience votes. The person with the lowest number of votes leaves the show. Repeat until there is only one person left. What am I missing?

Is it on par with an episode of Nova? No. It is after all a talent show to find a pop singer. Not sure what you're expecting from that. Me ,I expect to hear people sing pop tunes.

Makes me laugh AI drops in viewers and people come up with all these excuses...it still gets 18-20 million on a bad night

Ellen should find this guy and nail him to a cross.

I wonder which gets more viewers - American Idol or the bozo's newsite.

Who rammed the broom up that guy's butt? :S Seriously, Ellen is offensive? I think he needs a broomectomy...

Yes, violence is the answer

Ellen should sue him until he doesn't have a clean pair of underwear left, or any money left to own a computer to write his hateful garbage on. Let's see him talk after that.

I may hate American Idol with a passion and I will never understand the appeal of Ellen, but those comments were just pathetic.

According to the Christian fundies:

A Christian news site is making headlines by claiming Ellen DeGeneres is responsible for the ratings erosion of Fox's "American Idol."Christian Newswire director Gary McCullough says the sexual orientation of the newest "Idol" judge was the reason "Idol" ratings were down about 9% this season.
McCullough said he predicted that "Idol" ratings would drop after DeGeneres was announced as a judge and says Fox has paid the price:
"At this moment in entertainment history, network television is on a pro-homosexuality bender," McCullough wrote. "The producers of 'American Idol' chose to be a part of this push; it was a huge mistake. The consequences of this choice were a drop in market share and a reduction in advertising dollars ... it actually drives away a significant market share of parents and teens who used to watch the show together, until mom and dad decided that the subtle promotion of an 'alternate lifestyle' to their kids was not worth the entertainment trade off."
"Perhaps next we will see the pro-pedophilia group NAMBLA use its influence in Hollywood to have 'Dancing with the Stars' seat Roman Polanski as a judge," he added.

:vulcan::wtf::eek::rolleyes:
Good grief.

I would think that it's more likely that "Idol" has overstayed its welcome.

I don't know who Gary McCullough is, but it goes without saying that he will be caught with a rent boy within the next six months.
:guffaw:

I'm pretty sure it was that 99% couldn't sing.

Only 99%?! ;)

Isn't American Idol the gayest show on television anyway even with a hetero jury?

I love you...

Ryan Seacrest went straight? :wtf::wtf:

and I love you...

Christians are in a state of mind where anything that can be used to discredit gays must be used even in the face of logic that suggests otherwise. It's pathetic.

The logic is that 40% of priests are gay and X% of them are perverts that molest child. I learned long ago Christians and logic don't mix well.

While still hugely popular (only the Olympics and 'Dancing with the Stars' have ever beaten it in the ratings since 2004) 'Idol's' ratings have been in a gradual decline since Season 5, so unless gayness is like tachyons and travels backward in time, I don't see how anyone can pin this on Ellen. Of course, rationality and reality have nothing to do with this group's announcement.

Honestly, I think Idol's ratings loss is probably more related to the crossover appeal of the frontrunners (whether it be country like Carrie Underwood or rock like Chris Daughtry), how compelling/talented the frontrunners are in general, the appeal of the judges (Paula's gone now and her craziness was fun, Randy just says the same damn thing every time, Kara is boring, and Simon's been more subdued this year and will be gone now), and just the typical audience burnout you normally get from a show that's been on for nine seasons.

The singers are still talented, but there hasn't really been anyone I've been that interested in since the Daughtry or Underwood seasons. Not that that is necessarily reflective of the entire audience of course, just my opinion.

Wow, I didn't realize Adam Lambert's debut album was so relatively low in sales. Of course, it's interesting to note the chart does not mention Kris Allen, who "won" that season. I think his album sold 80,000 copies it's debut. (As you can see, Kris Allen was NOT my choice for S8).

This year I had a vested interest in Siobhan, Casey and Crystal. I like Lee, he seems like a nice guy and I'm glad life's fortune is going to bless him a bit, but Crystal was far more professional and polished. Which may be why Lee won, because the producers do want someone who is fresh faced and malleable, which Lee fits that bill really well.

Using their own silly "correlation implies causation" argument against them, those ratings actually show that Ellen Degeneres joining the panel has caused the ratings slide to slow down, losing only 600,000 viewers this season against 2.2 million the season before.

Well, I don't care at all about American Idol - the only singer I like who has ever come off that show is Daughtry, and I didn't even know he was an American Idol contestant until after I bought his album (after hearing some of the songs on XM radio). That is how low American Idol is on my radar. :p

However, I am glad to see that compared to some of the other contestants, Daughtry's album has done well.

I liked it...and hope he continues in the biz. :)

And as for the original topic...well, it is ridiculous to credit Ellen's presence with the decline in ratings. Did anyone ever think that maybe it's just starting to get old, after about a bazillion seasons?

Know-it-all attitude.

Overgeneralization

It's pathetic.

Self-righteousness.

Sounds like you fit your stereotype of a Christian. :techman:

---

As someone else pointed out...the ratings this season have actually stablized.

i think the lower interest include some of the following

  • lackluster contetstants. Very few personalities
  • Lack of diversity. This seems similar to "So You Think You Can Dance." Not to play too much into stereotypes, but it seems like there are more (number wise) talented minorities that we don't even see in the audition clips, let alone vote for.
  • The lack of "newness". This show has been on for ages, so we all know the routine, and many people have alredy auditioned and have either aged out or gave up.
  • Other shows to watch. For singing, there's "Sunday Best" and "America's Got Talent", and then there's 3 dance shows as well as a variety of other competitions.
  • Lack of results. What i mean is...how often do we really hear how close a vote was, or the margin of victory? It's starting to reflect "real life", where people think their votes don't matter.
As for Ellen's sexual orientation... i don't think it factors that much into it. She doesn't play it up. And many Christians don't find homosexuality any worse that non-married heterosexuality.

I actually like Ellen best of out the judges. She's the "nice" one,so if she critiques you (and she does), there's something you need to consider.

At the end of the day, Ellen still gets to go home and pork Portia De Rossi. I imagine she's feeling pretty good about all of this...
