Basically because there has been some confusion over what the first Smith series is called (season a, season 11.1, season 5, season 31) some people have taken to calling it other things. Fred is another popular one.

My understanding is that its officially season 5, it's just called 11.1 for production purposes.

Moffat's 'Production Notes' column in the January DWM. he insists it should be either season 1 (new production team, doctor, etc) or 31 (carrying on from the 26 years of old Who and with 4 of nu) and doesn't like 5. so he jokingly called it 'fnarg' because he's in charge and he can.
