When cracking open boiled eggs I always open the pointy end. I figure the round end would fit in the cup better, however there is another view, in which the round side is the top. GASP. A google image search of Humpty Dumpty reveals that the top can change from pointy to round. It's all very confusing I know. There's no set answer, until now. We will determine the final outcome. I love this thread ~ your nonsense has cheered me immensely! I vote pointy, because as you rightly point out (pun intended) the rounded end fits better into the egg cup! Also... does not the yolk usually end up nearer the rounded end so leaving it as a treasure to be dug for?
I usually roll my boiled eggs between my hands. Just the right amount of pressure causes the shell to fracture in small pieces and then you can just rip off the inner membrane with the shell still attached. I can shell an egg in under a minute like that. But if I was to do it the old fashioned way, I would choose the pointy end.
But but but ~ if you don't use an eggcup how do you keep the egg steady to dunk your marmite soldiers in?
Logic dictates that the larger, wider, end is the "bottom" since that'd be the end that you could stand the egg on.
If I was having soft boiled eggs, I would follow the example set by my mother when I was a child: Soft boil two eggs. Shell them while hot and put them both in a bowl. Toast and butter two slices of bread. Using a knife and spoon cut the eggs up in the bowl, so the white parts are look like they are in a yolk sauce. Rip one piece of toast into small pieces, add to eggs and mix up for a few second. Salt and pepper to taste. Eat what's in the bowl. Use the remaining slice of toast to mop up leftover yolk. YUM! I had never seen an egg cup before I spent a weekend with a Canadian family when I was 11 and in the Boy Scouts. They asked me if I would like pancakes or soft boiled eggs for breakfast. I always choose eggs. And I was mighty confused as to what to do with the egg still in its shell on the little pedestal they put in front of me.
Whenever I have boiled eggs, soft or hard, I have two or three in a cereal bowl. I don't have an egg cup. I actually shell them by tapping a line around the middle with a spoon, and then peeling off both ends with the membrane.
I read this post and suddenly imagine a lot of Vulcan children desperately trying to figure out why they can't stand their eggs up, on either end...
Yes, that's just too gross to consider But if you do it as you did like a child you miss out on the adventure that is eating a soft boiled egg from a pedestal ~ or an "egg cup" as we call it over here in the civilised world . The soft tapping of the pointy end, the slow peeling off of the shell, the salting of the white bit and then the wonderful delight of finding the golden yellow yolk inside. It's a journey ~ not just breakfast "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down" And they are correct!. You really need me to send you an egg cup, and would you like a toast rack with that
