Ebert trashes "Star Wars: The Clone Wars"

I'm not surprised at all. I never expected this to actually be a good movie. Fun, perhaps, but not high quality. But like the OP, i'm still going to see it, and I expect to enjoy myself at least somewhat.

Will they ever learn to slow down the fight scenes and make them a little bit more in line with the OT rather than the Crystal Meth speed lightsaber fight scenes. They just arent suspenseful...

So...

We already did a show called "Star Wars: Clone Wars".

What should we call the next show?

hmmm....

How's about "Star Wars: The Clone Wars".

Yes, brilliant! Name recognition!

What I find interesting is that FOX didn't want anything to do with it. So, LF got Warner Bros. to release it.

I believe that had more to do with the fact that Warner owns Cartoon Network, which is airing the show.

That's a great review. I especially liked this bit:

"The question is, who is Jabba's wife? The puzzle is, how do Hutts copulate? Like snails, I speculate. If you don't know how snails do it, let's not even go there. The last thing this movie needs is a Jabba the Hutt sex scene."

:guffaw:

I, also, will be seeing The Clone Wars anyways. It's Star Wars, after all; of course I'm going to see it and of course I'll do so while it's in theaters.

Ebert's opinion seems similar to mine, which was formed without my watching the film. There's no way I'm going to burn $10 on that turkey.

Yeah the hyper-kinetic lightsaber battles were pretty cool the first time I saw them in TPM, but frankly I've gotten kind of bored with them by now.

The fight scenes in the original movies may have been slow and methodical, but they also felt a lot more real-- the lightsabers seemed to have a real weight and power to them, and the characters were careful and focused with every move they made; there wasn't a lot of ridiculous flipping and jumping around.

The action in the prequels was certainly flashy and cool to look at, but it felt about as real as the action in a Jacky Chan movie.

I'll probably go see it during matinee hours. That way I'm not burning that much on a film that I know I would not absolutely love. However, I wouldn't be a big Star Wars fan if I don't go.

Has anyone noticed the quizzter.net star wars quiz at the bottom of the page? I took it and got 100% of course, however question 8 is worded completely wrong.

I also appreciate how Ebert noted the dialogue in the OT had a certain "grace" to it that's been missing from the prequels. Everyone wants to rip the OT for it's dialogue, but it was never as awkward, stilted and lifeless as what we've been getting from Lucas recently.

the lightsaber fight in TPM was great most likely because ray Park is an actual martial artist and probably guided the process himself. The other fights though are crap.

i will probably still watch the thing at some point but just not pay to watch it.

To respond to Ebert's review.. my one hope for Clone Wars was that the battles would be dazzling and fresh. The three-minute clip from Yahoo Movies I'm pretty sure he's referencing wasn't...

As he notes, it's low-budg CG. There's no excuse for it not to be a rollercoaster ride.

I'm not gonna go see it in the theater, but I will definately be buying the DVD and also following the series on Cartoon Network/TNT. I think that just because they are using real 'movie sound effects' just as they did somewhat woth the original Clone Wars cartoon is a big drawing factor for me.

The character animations may be awkward for all of us right now, but so were the original 'toon's...until you get used to them. Besides, the space battle scenes look really good in this new series.
