Ebert and Roeper to Leave "At the Movies"

Hannah Montana and the cast of High School Musical guest hosting "At the Movies", guaranteed.

As for Ebert and Roeper, it sounds like they're not leaving the game altogether which is good for their fans. I'm curious to see where they'll turn up.

I thought Jeff Craig was the worst critic ever. He's the top name when I think of who quote whores are. Hell, his "sixty second preview" radio show was called PREVIEW and not REVIEW because sometimes he's plugging a movie he never saw and is basically acting like a commercial for it.

Yeah, I think that's what Disney wants now. The shows get flashier and the reviews get shorter.

I don't know if you can really do a "Siskel & Ebert" type show anymore. Remember, they started out on PBS and pretty much were in control of what films they discussed and what they said.

I don't know how many networks would allow that any longer.

yes I do recall the PBS days...and I do miss Siskel. He was the 'everyman' while Ebert was always, I thought, the more cultured. But I think you are right. With many of the studios owning many of the networks, they are not going to want a show on their network that might bash a new movie..

Roeper and current co-host Michael Phillips, a critic for the Chicago Tribune, will tape four more shows to run through the weekend of Aug. 15. Both are pursuing other options for doing a show together.

Cool. I hope they get it. Then I'll watch that.

Yeah. I find that Phillips is the more reliable one (at least in matching what I like) so I wouldn't want Roeper to ditch the guy. Roeper is funny but can't really be trusted. ;)

Ebert and Roeper's replacements have been named:

Ben Lyons (From E! News) and Ben Mankiewicz (TCM Channel).

Hollywood nepotism never stops. Jeffrey Lyons (Ben's pop) is one of worst quote hungry whores out there.

I have no doubt Disney is trying to cater to a younger demo. New sets, new music, new logo, new hosts. This will be a trainwreck. It's a sad day for film criticism...

Aren't Ebert and Roeper still writing their columns? If so, who cares about the show? It was always just a highly abbreviated version of their printed opinions anyway. The good old days of Siskel and Ebert are long gone, and that's what I'll chose to be nostalgic for. It's not a sad day for film criticism, just a sad day for the ad execs and film producers who go to bed at night praying for a "two thumbs up" review that will guarantee an additional 20% revenue.

In this day and age with movie reviews of one kind or another in every print mag and newspaper, cable news outlets and morning shows, and a plethora of internet sites and blogs devoted to nothing but movies, I just don't see the point of the show's format at this time. They've never really been able to spend enough time on their reviews or debates to give anything but a cursory glance and a thumbs up or down to the 4-6 movies per 22 minutes they've got. Watching Gene and Roger respectfully bicker with one another provided a good deal of entertainment, that chemistry is absent from Roeper and Ebert and the guest hosts they've had.

I wanted Roeper and John Mellencamp to take over the show.

John: "I give it thumbs up. :techman:"

Richard: "But they've done such better work "

John: "It's not fair to judge an artist by their past work."

*Richard Roeper *

To the best of my knowledge, yes.

If so, who cares about the show? It was always just a highly abbreviated version of their printed opinions anyway.

Yes, but it was also the accessible version to the most people. That's the bad part. Coupled with the fact Disney is essentially kicking out people who know what they're talking about in a bid to attract younger demos.

Sure it is a sad day for film criticism. Did they always get it right? No. But they had fun doing it while making salient points about pictures. Not everyone has the time to check out the print reviews or know where to find them; everyone has at least heard of Ebert and Roeper.

The thing about that episode that was getting Roeper pissed off was that Mellencamp was giving thumbs up to everything without any real reason and with no reservations or criticisms whatsoever.

Agreed. I don't watch the show every week, but I liked it when Roeper and Phillips did team up. They made the show pretty good to watch.
