No, they definitely said that next season would be the final season.
To be fair, I can understand that: best to end the show on a high, and with a satisfying conclusion that ties up all the loose ends, than to let it go on for longer than necessary. Hopefully the writing will improve now that they've got an end date in mind, just to show that it's not just the writers making it up as they go along.
That said, I can understand if the audience clamours for more afterwards.

I hear they're just going to do some kind of spin off series, The Great Successor, or some such nonsense.
