early TMP promo

I collect comic books, as I am sure some of you do. In some of the comic books that came out, before the movie, there is a very interesting promo. It's a still frame shot of the Enterprise, and a row of pictures of the actors heads below the ship. The picture of the ship in the add does not look like the Enterprise in the movie. The nacells look a little more lowered, and it actually, to me, looks like a picture of the model they were going to use for the failed PHASE II series. And it would make sense, because the FX for the movie lagged behind, and print ads are sent months before they are actually seen...

What do some of you think? Do you know the picture I am talking about??

I've always preferred that poster to the one they used for the release (the one with the rainbow).

Really? I thought the saucer looked horribly out of proportion in that painting. I realize the ship is in a "zooming at you" pose, but even taking that into account, it just seems huge. The extra rows of windows on the saucer don't help.

You mean this one?

And yes, that is the Phase II Enterprise.

You are GOD! Thanks for the link, and yes that is the one. I am going to print that up on my new HIGH DEF printer. Brings back good memories. TMP, for all the crap it gets on this site, is really a good movie in it's own special way. No other TREK scene from any other TREK movie resonates as the opening KLINGON/VGR scene...the moment the credits end, to the Three Klingon ships coming straight at us, in 70mm!!! with all that music? THAT was the rebirth of modern TREK I still get goosebumps watching that scene...

What's wrong with the rainbow one? There's just something about the way the Enterprise looks on that one that always gives me this epic feel to space and its exploration and something, I don't know what, about the ship itself.

I like that rainbow one too, but I really like that view of the Enterprise in the poster. It really gave a 'large' feel to the movie, which I think was the whole idea..

What I always thought was a bit cheesy on that poster (the phase II ENT one) was the use of 'odyssey'. If I were making that movie, I'd have shied away from comparisons to 2001!

Actually, I always thought the people behind TMP were running towards 2001 as fast as they could - they really wanted to impress on everyone that this was Serious Science Fiction. Which is part of why the movie's gotten such a bad rap over the years, I think (although like many here, I love this movie).
