Early 2015 Book Schedule Update

Was perusing Amazon, and noticed that 4 new books were added for release in early 2015.

On January 27: TNG: Takedown by John Jackson Miller
On February 24: TOS: Savage Trade by Tony Daniel
On March 31: ENT: Rise of the Federation: Uncertain Logic by Christopher L. Bennett
On April 28: TOS: Crisis of Consciousness by Dave Galanter

It's always exciting to see new Trek novels listed to pre order.
Right now though., they're all listed only as ebooks. I expect print copies will be up to order later. Unless they're all ebook only, which I don't think is the case.
I stuck them all on my wish list for now. Will definitely be getting them.
I worry sometimes that the Trek novels will die out, so I'm always pleased to see new ones coming out. I have no idea how secure the line is.

Hopefully those two TOS books aren't just more 5YM books, but as there weren't any this year (except one? Greg Cox right?), they probably both are. When was the last time Dave Galanter wrote a trek book? Was it those TNG books with Greg Brodeur from 2001-ish?

I'll definitely be grabbing that TNG book as well as the next installment in Christopher's excellent Rise of the Federation series :techman:

Galanter wrote 2009's TOS: Troublesome Minds.

Probably right -- 5YM novels tend to be more the rule these days, than the exception (not counting the most recent TOS e-book). Hoping at least one of these takes place in a different time period.

Tony's book is definitely not just an ebook thing. It's a full-length Trek novel. Can't remember when it's set.

For the record, my last few TOS books were all set during the 5YM, but the next one, due out in November, is set during the movie era. And as for the next, next one . . . well, the outline has not yet been approved so I'll keep my mouth shut for now! :)

Glad to know there's a next book and a next next book Greg :)
I like all eras of Trek, but I like to get a diversity and TOS is focused too heavily in the line. Of course, a good book is a good book whenever it's set.
Movie era is a little more exciting, in part because it's so rare. Also, that means maybe Saavik will be in the book.

No Saavik, I'm afraid. It's set shortly after the fifth movie, so Saavik was gone by that point--and Sulu had not yet moved onto the Excelsior.

Basically, I wanted to write the original crew, just a bit older and wiser.

There is room to do more with the original crew in the movie era, develop their characters and lives more, since there's more time to work with and less done with that era.

To be sure, it depends upon which period of the movie era one's talking about; there are quite a few novels set between TMP and TWOK, but proportionally far fewer set between TVH and TUC (but also a surprising number occurring between TUC and the prologue of GEN).

But otherwise, agreed -- as a whole, I tend to prefer the movie-era versions of the TOS characters to their 5YM counterparts, but strictly as a personal-preference thing; mainly due to the "older-and-wiser" aspect that Greg mentions above.

To be sure, there are many excellent recent 5YM stories which provide some nice development for their younger selves, and there are many valid, intriguing aspects to the inexperienced Kirk and his crew which provide sharp contrasts to the movie period. That said, between the slightly-older version of the crew and the fact that the TV series era is very overtrodden creative ground by this point, any movie-era story is welcome when we finally get one.

Excited for the next Enterprise novel and the JJ Miller novel (especially after reading his Titan eNovella) but I'm most excited for a new Galanter novel! Wonderful surprise, that.

As for the other novel, Savage Trade...I'm not a big fan of Tony Daniel's previous Trek novel so any anticipation for this future book is muted until we learn more about its contents.

So far, 2015 has three very enthusiastic "Yeas" and one abstention from me -- a pretty good start for next year!

Same here -- Troublesome Minds was one of my favorites of that year; even if it's another 5YM novel, I'd totally be down for it.

I thought Una McCormack's DS9 novel The Missing was due in Jan. I already pre-ordered it, maybe it was December for that one.
