Eaglemoss's Newest Discovery Ships

SD0_Bstlh.jpg

"Dispatch war rocket Ajax!"

Isn't that the starship of Mudd's wife's parents?
It's also cocincidentally the only other starship I kind of like, in a very retro-scifi-way.

THESE ARE FUCKING 2D-DESIGNS.
They don't have height! Its a simple 2-D image pulled in the 3rd dimension.
These designs are shit as hell. There is intricate surface textures, but no detail:
Where are the windows? Hatches? Weapon ports? Anything that gives a sense of scale?

They don't look like pieces of technology - you don't know which parts serve which (if any) functions. Where are the engines (do they even HAVE some?). Which parts are the warp nacelles? Where is the bridge? Is there an equivalent to a deflector dish?
They look purely like some grad-students design renderings. Not like real objects.

We've been asking that question for 40 years, dude.

I take it this is your first time ever seeing a Klingon space ship...

There are no deflectors on Klingon ships.

It's those glowy-things above the neck. Usually red. (First time seen on the K'Tinga) All ENT designs have it (D5, BoP, Augments assault ship, Raptor...). The Vor'cha and Negh'Var admittedly not as prominent.

Deflectors are rare on all non-Federation ships though.
Warp nacelles, impulse engines, windows, shuttle-ports etc. on the other hand not. They are well established and common design elements in Star Trek ships throughout - because they make sense. And all previous klingon ships have at least most of those design elements. The DIS-pseudo-klingon ships being the clear outlier here.

Apart from the fact that those features were never identified as "deflectors" and most diagrams call them "space energy sink" thingies... well, there are glowy things on the new Klingon starships too, in roughly the same location now that I think of it. What convinced you that those aren't deflectors?

Deflectors are rare on all non-Federation ships though.
So what are you complaining about?

Warp nacelles, impulse engines, windows, shuttle-ports etc. on the other hand not.
So then where are the windows, shuttle bays, docking ports and the warp nacelles on the Search for Spock Klingon bird of prey? And where did those features go when they took that bird of prey model and scaled it up to 400 meters in "Yesterday's Enterprise?"

The weapons are at the edge of the wings (duh!) and in the middle of the bridge module sphere. The impule engine is at the back of the ship. The warp nacelles (allegedly) on the top (where they are on the 22nd century ENT-era BoP), and it has windows (although very few) on the sides, as well as a boarding ramp on the end.

In fact, the existence of these surface details is the main reason the upscaling in TNG is questionable - and why it was replaced with the Vor'cha as soon as they had the money to build a new studio model.

The DIS-klingon ships lacking ALL these common design elements is the clear outlier. You come across as if you never have taken a look at previous (klingon) starships. Those are the elements that give them a sense of scale. DIS is missing that entirely.

So what are you complaining about?

I don't want "ALL" scaling details on a starship. But I want at least some. To give it a sense of scale. And to make it look like a real piece of technology. These new "klingon" ships lack everything.

The weapons are at the edge of the wings (duh!)
Weapons were the one thing I DIDN'T ask you about.

a boarding ramp on the end.
Where exactly is the boarding ramp? It's interesting that that particular feature isn't very well depicted on the model either.

In fact, the existence of these surface details is the main reason the upscaling in TNG is questionable
No, the ambiguity of those features is the reason the upscaling HAPPENED. Because there's nothing on the Bird of Prey model that actually gives the design away for a particular size, and scaling it up dramatically doesn't look all that odd. Same thing happened with the Grissom; the ship was designed with multiple rows of small, narrow windows and very few distinct features, so when TNG needed it to represent a "small Starfleet vessel" in "The Naked Now" they just tool the old Grissom model. The ship as originally designed had a 6-deck saucer and was almost 300 meters long; at the new scale it was almost exactly half that.

The DIS-klingon ships lacking ALL these common design elements is the clear outlier.
Klingon ships have ALWAYS lacked those elements, is my point. It's the whole reason the Bird of Prey changes sizes every time we see it. So does the Negh'Var, actually; the first time we see it in "All Good things" it's smaller than the Vor'cha, and then when we see it in the mirror universe it's 4 kilometers long.

Fans like you....:barf:
Good lord, are you really that sensitive about any criticism of any minor aspect of Discovery? Maybe this forum is not for you if you can't deal with reading anything you don't like.

Regardless, you've been told plenty of times to knock off the insults, so you've earned another infraction for flaming. Comments to PM.

That Shenzhou is a fine looking ship, now that we can actually see it. I like the burgundy trim paired with the grey hull colour. Discovery looks quite nice too.

The Klingons no longer have their own ship 'style' - their new fleet of ships look like they are lifted from Voyagers generic 'alien of the week' production line. Ship of the dead was cool though.
Yeah bit of a shame really.

Love the Discovery model and all the detail.

The Europas main hull/saucer looks like it could be pretty big, like maybe ambassador/galaxy class in size, although not as deep obviously.

Will be really interesting to see actual dimensions.

The Klingon ships really don't float my boat at all, @Timofnine said it best on the first page.

Edit: The Edison looks big as well with its extended width saucer.
