Each ST has a characteristic line...

Red Shirt
I was discussing this recently, and some friends of I and I decided that each ST film has a characteristic line, a line that sort of epitomizes the specific spirit of the film and is utterly distinctive.

For The Final Frontier, it's gotta be: "What does GOD need with a starship?"

TWOK: "KHAAAAAAN." (Duh).

Generations: "It was...fun."

First Contact: "A line must be drawn, here! This far, no further. And I will make them pay for what they've done."

Insurrection: If this movie had been done properly, the line would've been "To Be Continued..." halfway through and it would've been a made-for-TV special. Because really, people, it was just a two-parter with a bigger budget and non-TV release. I find it hard to see it as worthwhile like Gen or FC or even Nemesis were.

The Search For Spock: "Don't call me Tiny" (maybe?)...

The Voyage Home: "Nuclear wessels."

TMP: ?

The Undiscovered Country: "Tach bah tach beh...to be...or not...to be" (then the Klingon Bird-of-Prey explodes).

Nemesis: ?

Excellent topic! :)

For TMP I think the phrase "The human adventure is just beginning" defines what the spirit of that film, and Star Trek itself, is about.

For Nemesis? Hmmmmm, that's a toughie. Maybe "Why does the tall man have a furry face?"

TMP's would be Decker's cut line in the theatrical and DE and only seen in the SLV: "We all create God in our own image."

Although only sorta spoken in TVH, for TSFS: "The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many."

Watching some of Nemesis last night for the first time in a long time, Picard's toast (both the comic bits and serious bits) was great.

What I've never understood about that speech and the general tone of the film is how mean everyone is to Data, e.g. "Shut up, Data!"

It just seems he acts more machine-like and gets treated more first-seasonish than he was in the previous three films.

TMP: "Why is everything we don't understand always called a thing"

I was going to nominate Bones' "Drafted" line, or maybe the one where he talks about "V'Ger having a tantrum", but that works just as well.

Cheers,

I'm going to stick with actual dialogue quotes that I think are emblematic of the themes in the film.

TMP: Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more?
TWOK: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
TSFS: The word is no. I am therefore going anyway.
TVH: To hunt a species to extinction is not logical.
TFF: I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain.
TUC: People are very frightened of change.

That's actually one of my least favourite things about that film - for a movie with so much Data, it's as if they didn't even watch a tape of him post-EaF. Generations and First Contact had really good roles for Data; Insurrection made fun of him a bit but he was still evolved, Nemesis basically undid every bit of character development in 10 years.

As to the topic, for TUC: "They're dying." "Let them die!"

Speaking of the too be continued line for Insurecction...

Wasn't there an episode where they relocated people using the holodec? Was that okay because their planet was dying? I know there was that particular, but a part of me was "hey - why are you so outraged? You wrote the book on transporting humanoids without their knowledge."

Insurrection: "How many people does it take, Admiral, before it becomes wrong, hmmm?"

TUC: ""If I were Human, I believe my response would be, 'Go to Hell'. If I were Human..."

FC: "Captain, I believe I speak for everyone here sir when I say, 'To Hell with our orders'."

Essentially the same quote for similar characters, but still entertaining nonetheless.

Kirk: "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Spock: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."
McCoy: "It's what you do. What you always do: Turn death into a fighting chance to live."
Scotty: "Hello, computer?"
Sulu: "Fly her apart, then!"
Chekov: "Nuclear wessels."
Uhura: "Hello boys, I've always wanted to perform in front of a captive audience."
Picard: "The line must be drawn here. This far, and no further. And, I will have my revenge!"
Riker: "Someone once said 'Don't be a great man, but just be a man, and let history make its own judgments.'"
Data: "Saddle up. Lock and load."
Geordi: "Coolant leak!"
Worf: "Assimilate this!"
Beverly: "Haven't you noticed that your boobs have been firming up? Not that we care about these things in this day and age."
Troi: "Cough. Cough. Cough." (Getting drunk with Dr. Cochrane)
