Well this is going to be difficult to me there so many i like and iv only got the first 3 seasons so far and im still waiting for my other seasons to arrive so here it goes.

"Meredian" is one of the most hated episodes here. I love Jadzia and almost automatically love any episode that focuses on her, but even I can't support that one. I explained why in the "Each season's worst" thread.

..and because it aired right after GENERATIONS came out, I was glad kirk had died after all. Having him live an possibly appear in such idiotic episodes like that one was something I didn't ever want to see.

Spock's Brain was far better!!!

It's funny that you mention "Spock's Brain" because I was about to say that "Meredian" did for Jadzia what "Spock's Brain" did for Spock! I mean that as in make an episode that's very focused on one character and leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

However, I think at least "Spock's Brain" wasn't a bad episode because of making the character look bad by having him act out of character or do something dumb. Right? If I recall correctly, I think that episode fails more for the clunkiness of the storytelling than the protagonist acting out of character, but I'm not sure. I've only seen it once awhile ago and couldn't bring myself to ever watch it again.

From what I can tell, generally it is disliked because it combines a couple of everyone's favorite pet peeves, namely the "reset-button" and the "one episode romance."

For me personally, as is also the case for "Let He Who is Without Sin...," this episode doesn't make my "most hated" list as it does for many fans. I have never rewatched it, but there was just enough there to keep me mildly interested the first time through.

For one thing, the B-story is pretty funny as I recall. As for the main story, what salvaged it for me was that this is one of the few examples where we actually see Jadzia behaving differently than an unjoined individual (other than those episodes that deal with the symbiote or past lives explicitly). I could see the hunger for new experiences being so strong in a centuries-old being that it becomes the main imperitive of that individual's existence, leading to decisions that seem totally irrational from the point of view those who only get one chance at life.

Overall, I thought the writers never made much headway with the idea of the joined Trill. So, despite all its weaknesses, I thought this episode was one of the few that actually attempted to explore how joining might impact an individual's choices.

Because I don't believe it is possible to fall so in love with someone so completely over a matter of hours that you'd be willing to sacrifice your career, friends, family, and risk your life in order to be with them. Sure, it's possible to fall in love so completely, but to do it so quickly shows a major personality flaw. Not to mention the fact that Jadzia and her romance-of-the-week had about as much chemistry as a physics exam.

The b-story is great though, that's grade A material.

Agreed on the chemistry, that is one of the episode's glaring weakness. These two would have to have had some serious chemistry for the episode to feel plausible, and it wasn't there.

As for the general principle of the thing... Falling in love so quickly and being willing to sacrifice so much might be the result of a personality flaw in a normal person, but for an individual with centuries of experience? I don't know. Instincts might be sharper, the thirst for new experience might be stronger, you might trust your feelings more implicitly.

I agree in theory, it's more than possible that after living 8 life-times Dax wanted to experience something new and the quantum reality stuff seemed like something fresh. But that's not the way it came across on-screen, rather than seeming like a wise elder being that came to an important decision after much thought, Jadzia acted like a teenager that wanted to elope with her boyfriend.

And the worst thing of all about that episode is how boring it is. It's a pity, Jonathan Frakes directed some great episodes such as The Drumhead, Cause and Effect and Projections, but he also has episodes like this and Sub Rosa to his name.

I'm not sure it would necessarily be a question of wisdom exactly, at least not in the sense of weighing the pros and cons and then coming to an informed decision. I think what this episode was trying to illustrate was that Jadzia as a joined Trill was more ready to embrace the moment and follow her instincts than an ordinary person, more ready to make sacrifices, less hampered by self-doubt.

Anyway I agree the execution is deeply flawed and unconvincing.
