E3 2008 - Discuss!

^Crackdown did have a plot, you just had to complete it to see what it was.

The Agency set the three gangs up to take power in the city so that they would cause absolute chaos. They then sent you in to get rid of them so people would be happy to accept absolute control in exchange for dealing with the gangs.

I don't think Crackdown was hyped. A lot of people bought it for the Halo beta and then were surprised that they got a good game for free with it.

It is limited, short and very samey all the way through, but it's also great fun.

Hermiod, never knew you were a Gunners fan.

Is that the actual tone of red for the new jersey? I thought it was more burgundy than that.

I did read about the ending, but I like a bit more substance than that. If the "plot" amounted to "they tell you this at the end" then it may has well have been omitted.

How did you not notice that ? :)

I have the new shirt. It is indeed the usual Arsenal red. The sleeves are partially white with a redcurrant (the official name for the "old" Arsenal colour used for the last season at Highbury kit) stripe.

Better pics of the new home and away shirts.

Crackdown is my favourite sandbox game in recent years. I don't feel like sandbox games in general have gone anywhere since GTA3.

[ps3fanboy]That's cos the RROD machine is limited with it's low-tech DVD drive and can't handle proper next gen games[/ps3fanboy]

Sort of like the new Away, it's different from anything I've seen Arsenal wear before. Wish they'd stuck to the redcurrant for the home jersey though, much more regal.

Anyway, back on topic, I think Gears 2 looks AMAZING, that, Fable, the FFXIII announcement and the Netflix deal made this a pretty darn decent show for MS. I don't expect much from Ninty though.

The last season at Highbury shirt was a one off. I don't think a permanent switch would be all that popular.

I'm wondering what Sony will come up with.

Sony will be interesting. I wonder if they'll pull anything out of the hat to match FFXIII. I only own a PSP from them so hopefully they'll have something decent on the handheld front too.

As for Ninty, I reckon there'll be a new Zelda announced. And, y'know, yet more necromancy on their tired, bloated old franchises. And probably a shitload of crappy party games. And motion controlled dumbells.

Fuck Nintendo, seriously.

Maaaaaaan, I so can't wait for Fallout 3. Gonna buy two copies of that mofo, one to play and one to shove up my ass. /fanbo1

^There was something interesting for PSP owners yesterday. They launched their Go TV service in conjunction with Sky. It's a pay service that brings streaming video programming to your PSP in the UK.

Yeah, this is what I've been saying, too. Nintendo need to pull something big out of their hat this time. Everyone else is following their lead with the party, and casual games, and the xbox (arcade) is almost as cheap as the Wii now. Nintendo's resurrected, and "Insert Mario Here" games are getting tiresome, so they have to have something worthwhile this year, or I reckon their bubble will burst.

Most folks seem fairly certain God of War III will be there in CG teaser form. I'd love to see some of Heavy Rain, Infamous and Resistance 2 will get a major push, Killzone might not, since it's coming out March 09 and they might want to focus on only one shooter, but I can see them unveiling multiplayer features. Motorstorm, Wipeout and SOCOM are all likely to make an appearance.

There are rumored to be at least two surprise games, we'll see soon.

I think we're definitely going to see a God of War 3 teaser from Sony, something short and pre-rendered but it'll probably be kickass.

Nintendo, I bet, will continue to bore the entire world. Sorry, the Wii was great, but the software for the bloody thing has been boring and redundant, on the whole. And there's nothing on Nintendo's horizon that sounds even remotely exciting. What have they been up to this past year of development? Mario Sluggers? I seriously hope that's not all they have to show for themselves - do we really need another Wii baseball game?

Activision's slate.

The expected games are on there - Guitar Hero: World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War, Wolfenstein, Quantum of Solace, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and by far the most important game of E3 (for me, anyway :) ) - Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion.

Some screenshots have shown that Spider-Man, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Nick Fury and Captain America will be in the game, despite some of those characters being licensed individually to other companies (i.e. the Sega own the rights to produce video games based on the Fantastic Four, Hulk and Iron Man movies).

They also announced new games based on the Transformers 2 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine movies.

Once again I have to demonstrate my ignorance as to what's going on in the gaming world. What's this "Fallout 3" game all about? Shooter? RPG? ect?

RPG set in post-apocalyptic Washington DC. First or Third person (whichever you prefer), robust character development system. Think beefed up "Oblivion" in a nuclear wasteland.

More info here:

Sadly it's been banned in Australia for drug content :(

A bit of both, as it happens.

It's a long story, but way back in the late nineties Fallout and it's sequel were released within a year of each other to great critical acclaim, and became cult hits. They were isometric, free roaming, non linear RPGs with turn based combat.

The rights were bought by Bethesda (of Elder Scrolls fame) and they have developed the third game, but they've taken it in a very different direction.

It's set in the same post apocalyptic retro-50s b movie world, but the combat is now real time/paused and it is played in either first person or over-the-shoulder perspective.

Like the originals, and Bethesda's other big ass game Oblivion, it's one of those free-roaming "living breathing world" jobbies with a branching storyline, sidequests galore, hundreds of NPCs and a slew mind-boggling stats to shake a radioactive twig at.

Edit: Or, Twilight's far more succinct and to the point answer.

It's still legal to import, at least. I'm not sure if there are any region locks to bypass or other such technical hurdles, however.

The changes from the earlier games which Bethesda has made to Fallout 3, as outlined above by MisterGaribaldi, don't have everybody cheering. If you have the stomach for it, try reading through the No Mutants Allowed message board once and while... the hardest of the hardcore over there make the anti-Enterprise/Bring Back Kirk Trekkies look like tame lil' kittens. There's just no pleasing those guys.

I, on the other hand, can't wait to lob mini-nukes at things.

If anyone's interested, I'll be once again "liveblogging" the Nintendo conference. It starts in about twenty minutes. I'll do the Sony event after that as well. Can't wait to see how they plan on recovering from the Square-Enix announcement yesterday! You want my advice, Sony? Suikoden VI. C'mon baby, make it happen.
