E-readers and critical mass discussion

The nook is great for out of print, out of copyright work you can't find. There's some great early sci-fi and pulp... And of course, Sherlock Holmes, Dickens, etc...

I picked up Dostoyevsky's complete works for less than $5. :D

Personally I found I did not like most of the completely free ones, because there was a sacrifice in readability.

But so many books of THAT length, and all those short stories, for so little? Well worth it. :)

^ But for the stuff that's free, I can use my phone. For that matter, I can use my phone for almost any ebooks and not have to bother with or buy another device. As far as eye strain goes, if I'm going to read that long, I want a real book anyway, and for fill-in-the-blank-space-of-time reading, my phone serves just fine. :techman:

I don't have an e-reader yet... I've been watching them closely since the first Kindle came out, and it's only a matter of time until I get one. But I was going to ask you, have you ever tried reading from a Kindle or a Nook? You can see/hold/read an example Kindle at Target or Staples, and you can check out a Nook at Barnes & Noble or Best Buy. Take a look at both. The e-ink is amazing.... so easy on the eyes, and I can't even see any pixelation on the letters, they're just perfect. It beats the heck out of reading on any back-lit device like a phone or PC screen, and either reader is a lot lighter than a hardcover.

Yes, there are down sides, but upsides as well.

That's just my two cents.

I played with the wireless Kobo e-reader at Chapters/Indigo in Toronto. I was actually very impressed, and it has me wavering a bit. The Kobo also comes with 100 preloaded "classics".

I almost feel ashamed to be considering getting one! Feels like I'm betraying print!

* shrugs *

Perhaps I'm just old fashioned, but I honestly don't find e-readers particularly interesting. I like having some stuff on my computer where I can find it easily, but I also like traditional books that don't rely on electricity. :p :D

True. But I also like my e-reader for when I leave the country for several months and I can just fill it up with a few dozen books.

My e-reader is also a big travel plus. I definitely do road trips, so that's a very good thing to have around. Makes it much easier to pack light, too. At home, I like my books. But my little "PADD"--and I actually went into the settings and my Nook proudly displays the name "The Cardassian's PADD"! ( ;) )--is a great thing when I'm out and about.
