seriously though I have no problem with a conservative Trek actor. I think most Trek fans have a pretty good bullshit meter towards ideology of any kind, even if it was coming from Rodenberry himself. It's in the spirit of Trek to shake up hard ideologies because they all tend to lead to destruction and supression of the human will.

Victoria Jackson is the best Hollywood-based representation of modern conservatism I've ever seen. A right wing everywoman... someone to whom Republicans can easily relate.

I'd still place Fred Thompsen much, much higher than Victoria Jackson, and the guy ran for president. He'll be returning to film and TV soon.

Speaking of Hollywood, I always thought it was ludicrous in 2008 for the GOP to try and paint Obama as an ironic "superstar," when McCain had been on far more shows than Obama ever did at that point. He was one of Jon Stewart's most common guests, he had been on SNL a few times (even before Palin ever made any sort of national news), and he did the occasional cameo on a few shows, and many argued that his connection to the media (very much like Mike Huckabee) helped re-elevate his status so that he could run again.

Because people feel so trapped and helpless when they know they won't starve and won't have to be homeless even though they can't find a job, and that they would be able to get medical help if they get seriously ill even if they don't have ridiculous amounts of money to pay. It's like having a domineering mother! Horrible, I say! What they really need is a state that will act like a nice mom who chucks them out in the street and tells them "if you have no money, you can die for all we care". So that then they have the freedom to do that exactly. (Sure, they won't have a freedom to do much else, but who cares.)

There is obviously such a thing as going too far with welfare but the basics are just that... the basics. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are hard to do when you can afford none of the above.

I actually agree--but the emphasis is on the fact that, for all the good intentions--that is what it's spiraled down into. Going too far.

Should there be social programs? Sure. But the Federal Government, with all the bureaucracies inherent, should not take it upon itself to do this--because it simply results in a permanent underclass that feels trapped and helpless--that is being smothered--that is constantly being told that, "You can't make it on your own!"

These programs, I believe, must be kept in the state and local levels, so as to discard all this corruption and waste...and to that end we must dedicate all our energies--and our cares.

So to be honest, DevilEyes...yes, those situations are similar.

A mother raises a child for a limited amount of time. The moment the "child" is grown up, the mother must let him go, to live his life on his own. The further the government from the people...the less likely it becomes that such a determination can be honestly made.

Or maybe you'd like to explain why welfare states don't have higher unemployment rates and how come that some countries (like the one where I live) with little or no social security happen also to have enormous unemployment rates and low average salaries...

Well, one good reason is that unemployment rates use most unusual algorithms--such as whether or not people in question are looking for work.

But another possability is that there are other factors involved--and that the existence, or lack thereof, of a welfare state is not the only factor.

Now, you are right in that unemployment rates are determined by the strength of the economy, not the dole, per se. But to be frank...that proves my own point. Take the Roaring '20s, before Hoover's Federal Reserve policies screwed it all up. There was no welfare state in America, then...and the unemployment rate was...1.8%.

Just saying.

But the fact is...if the dole supplies your needs...what's the incentive to work for a living?

I don't know if there are others who feel the same way here, but Dwight's case, to me, is yet more reinforcement to the idea that I'd rather not know about an actor's politics, whether I agree with them or not.

They play characters on movies/television, and that is all that I am interested in, when it really gets down to it. They aren't playing themselves.

That's a shame. Dwight and I stand on rather separate ground and it will be a bit harder for me to look at him and laugh along with him in TNG, Voyager and that one SG-1 episode now. It's important to keep a level head on things and not let these things bother you; I'd imagine it must be rather hard for conservatives to deal with all these 'crazy liberal actors' so I should say I have it easy. But still.

I completely agree with you here. Also, I found that it was just a little bit harder to like Chakotay on Voyager after reading what Robert Beltran had to say about the series.... but we're all entitled to our opinions.
