Here's what happened - Nero got up to 99% while burning a dvd, and seemed to want to stay that way - 20 minutes, and still the drive light was flashing. Stupidly (since this is my best burner), I manually ejected using a paperclip instead of restarting and doing it that way. I heard some grinding-like noises, and then restarted. I wanted to show a couple of people on another forum what had happened, so I duplicated the problem (during a read only) a couple of times - basicly the disc was still spinning in the tray, and with my duplifing the problem, a few scratches are on the tray (but mainly just on the "lip" - where the very outside of the disc sits when you put it in).
Someone has suggested things like the disc could have slammed into the write laser, thrown the gears out of whack (wouldn't that just be during ejecting?), or...
EDIT: btw, I jnow it's as simple as buying a new burner, but I've tried several, even one of the same brand, and they don't churn out burns anywhere near as good as this one.

If something has gone wrong, will I notice straight away, or will it happen in time? Nero comes with a quality check (cd-dvd speed under nero toolkit) that I use, I've done a burn since and that was fine, but I'm worried about the things I can't see, like disc wobble, and the stuff mentioned above. Basicly, is there any way I could tell, now, if anything has been screwed, or will it just eventually cause problems one day, just like a normal burner would that had become too old?
