Dustin Hoffman to star in David Milch HBO series "Luck"

My interest in horse racing is approximately zero, but this sounds too good to pass up.

Two-time Academy Award winner has been cast in the HBO skein that centers on several eclectic personalities who ply their trade on the horseracing circuit. Hoffman will portray a man in his late 60s just released from four years in prison who's autodidact, intelligent, and deeply involved in gambling.

That is a HUGE coup for HBO. Hoffman is a supremely talented actor and to commit to a television series when you are one of the greatest movie actors ever and you commit to a TV series.. that's huge.

Being "great" alone doesn't get you paid. A lot of actors who are on TV now probably wouldn't be if their film careers of varying degrees of success hadn't stalled (Gary Sinise, Charlie Sheen, Glenn Close, Alec Baldwin, even Kiefer Sutherland). I suspect though that the movie actors who are steadily getting eight figure paychecks won't want to do TV when the roles stop coming in.

But the silver lining to this is a lot of TV, especially on cable, has material that equal to and sometimes better than quality movies.

^ None of those actors' careers have come close to equalling Hoffman's though. To get a two-time Oscar winner who's a household name in even the most cinematically unaware houses is some ways above landing Charlie Sheen for your tv show.

But in general terms, I'd say your assessment is correct, both regarding the reasons why movie actors opt for tv shows and regarding the quality of tv versus movies.

I'll be watching. "David Milch announces Deadwood revival" is what I really wanted to see, but whatever.

Overall, I find TV more interesting than movies nowadays.

I don't know. It seems to me that it's almost become en-vogue for movie actors to play in high-quality tv shows in the last couple years.

Well, in the past decade or two, it's become fashionable for actors to do animated films, so I'm not going to hold Kung Fu Panda against Hoffman. Mr. Magorium, on the other hand, was unforgivable.
