Duke Nukem Never ? 3D Realms Shuts Down

I think the window had closed on Duke for a successful sequel anyway. Its no-holds-barred style, which seemed so groundbreaking at the time, long ago became a standard for shooters, and it's hard to imagine how a sequel would have much new to offer other than a simple nostalgia trip.

Don't get me wrong, I'll line up to buy DNF if it ever comes out. But I just have a hard time seeing it has a huge hit.

If it's a good game - why not?

Of course they'd probably need to start over again to get the game up-to-date to modern tastes.

I remember playing Duke3D on my school's LAN network during class - that was fun.

Well, this is wholly expected news, their last popular game was Duke Nukem 3D, was it not? How much longer were they expecting to ride that tidal wave of success for? 13 Years was about as long as they could hope for without a game release.

Depends what you mean by popular. After Duke Nukem 3D there was Max Payne, Max Payne 2 and Prey, plus various other minor Duke Nukem games.

I suspect re-releasing Duke Nukem 3D on Xbox Live Arcade did not hurt the bank balance.
3D Realms made the Max Payne games? Guess I should check the fine print on my game boxes more closely in the future...

Thank god. I was getting tired of 3dReals lame respond "when its done" mantra, everytime they were asked when the game was coming out.
I believe you are thinking of Blizzard. They are the ones known for that exact response.

3D Realms always gave a release date. Just never met it.

Don't forget the hugely popular and successful Math Rescue!

^ 3DR gave a few release timeframes early in the piece, but switched to "when it's done" some years back.

Just one, teeny-tiny difference:

Blizzard actually releases games.

Starcraft: Ghost aside, you can't fault Blizzard (or Valve, also notorious for such a repsonse) when they actually follow through with highly successful, polished, very entertaining games.

DNF and 3DRealms were a joke.

^Plus, Blizzard has World of Warcrack.

They can do whatever other projects they frakking well choose as long as people keep handing over their subscription fees every month to pay their dealer. :)

Epic did it as well with UT2K3...

Well, Take-Two is suing 3D Realms...

http://kotaku.com/5255220/take+two-...devs-over-failure-to-deliver?skyline=true&s=x

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. filed a breach of contract suit against Apogee Software Ltd. this week in a Manhattan Court over the developer's "continually delayed" Duke Nukem sequel. Details of the suit were not disclosed in a report by Bloomberg, nor has the New York County Civil Court provided specifics about the damages Take-Two is seeking.

It's the gift that keeps on giving.

^ How exactly are Take Two expecting to make money out of that court case? Last I heard 3D Realms shut down because they ran out of cash

They produced while Remedy developed it.

Thing is that no money ever exchanged hands between Take Two and 3D Realms, as I understand it. So the suit is pretty unlikely to go anywhere anyway.

Take-Two pumped in something like $12 million to originally get the publishing rights, didn't it?

Yes, but not from 3D Realms... they purchased the publishing rights from Infogrames. The game was entirely self funded, apparently, so it's not really clear what contractual obligation 3D Realms actually had with Take Two.
