Duke Nukem Forever: Releases 2011 on 360, PS3 and PC

From Joystiq:

It's finally, really, actually ... maybe going to happen at this point. The rumors are true: Gearbox Software and 2K Games have taken on the Herculean task of completing and releasing 3D Realms' unfinished Duke Nukem Forever. The project was officially unveiled today at PAX during a livestreamed presentation at the 2K Games booth and announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. "It's coming out in 2011," Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said during the presentation. (Of course, we're skeptical about any release date associated with this particular title.)

Gearbox began finishing Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009, according to The Wall Street Journal. "Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," Pitchford told WSJ.

"We're in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill," Pitchford added. "We need to get past the shock and awe, and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan."
I went to Vegas and I bet it all on Duke and all I got was this lousy--

I predict that this will be the biggest gaming non-event of 2011. After 12 years of anticipation, jokes, crushed hopes, and 4chan memes, whatever game we get is almost certain to fail to live up to the hype.

Is it April 1st already?

If it *does* happen in 2011, I bet it'll be in fucking November, making that a bloody crowded and expensive month (with Arkham City, Saints Row 3 and Hitman 5 all due then!)

It would be absolutely HILARIOUS if the game really did get released and then proceeded to be released on exactly April 1st. People would insist it was an April Fools Joke, and then the joke would indeed be on them for not believing.

They should release it on December 22 2012. That way the ad could go "The Mayans were right! The end is near! Duke Nukem Forever is being released!!!"

I thought I read an article about how the game was developed for PS2/XB1 and all the work done at that point wasn't even usable for the PS3/360, that they took so long in the development process the technology they started with kept being antiquated by the time they got anywhere with it.

It was originally being done in the Quake engine. That is, the original Quake. I even saw a few screenshots. Then, I think they switched to Quake II, and eventually wound up on the Unreal engine--which is, yes, cross-platform (including consoles.)

As I understand, TPTB at 3D Realms were obsessed with having the game use completely cutting-edge technology. Problem was, they were licensing third-party engines, so they would always be just a little bit behind the curve no matter what they did.

They faced the same sorts of problems as Daikatana as far as development, but at least Daikatana was fucking released!

"Looks like cleanup on aisle four."

I'll buy it. Sure, it's been a 13 year wait, and the whole thing became a farce, but DN3D kicked all kinds of ass back in the day, and there are quite a few of us faithful old fogey hardcore gamers who kept a candle burning for Duke...

Daikatana shouldn't have been released. ;)

I expect DNF will end up being an average first person shooter with a lot of tits, ass and some laughs thrown in. It will probably be enjoyable, but not revolutionary.

You know, I'd generally disagree that it will fail to live up to the "hype", unless it's a complete piece of crap. I do think people will expect it to be playable after 12 years of development hell, but how much hype is there really? It's got legendary/meme status, but only as being vapour-ware, and the fact that it's getting released at all is rather surprising. I don't think people have much of an expectation for it, certainly not in the way they expect Halo: Reach or the new Black Ops games to be a A+ titles.
