DuckTales reboot coming to Disney XD in 2017

I just finish posting about Danger mouse and Inspector Gadget, then I read about this. What's next? :p

The new series will follow Scrooge McDuck, his curious and mischief-making grandnephews — Huey, Dewey and Louie — and the optimistic yet temperamental Donald Duck as they embark on high-flying adventures worldwide. Other beloved characters slated to be in the new stories are: Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose, Launchpad McQuack, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell & Poe, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys (Burger Beagle, Bouncer Beagle), Mrs. Beakley and Webbigail Vanderquack.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Very cautiously. Feathers crossed!

"Cautiously optimistic" about a TV show? That's silly. At this point, we don't know anything other than that it's coming back. I'd say being optimistic about it is entirely fair. There's no need to be cautious about it!

^I was just thinking it's probably going to be 3D-animated because that seems obligatory these days. Which worried me at first, but now that I think about it, I suppose it could turn out well if it were done with sufficient budget and artistry. Lots of 3D-animated TV shows look crude and have a certain sameness to them, but there are some really well-done ones, like Dreamworks Dragons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'm not crazy about the bouncy animation style on Disney's Star Wars Rebels, but it might work better for anthropomorphic ducks and dogs.

I suppose there will also probably be some recastings. Alan Young is still alive and active, but he's in his 90s and probably not up to the grind of a weekly series. I can think of some people who might be good as Scrooge, like Billy Connolly or Sylvester McCoy. Still, it would take some getting used to.

The thing I'd most want them to do is bring back Ron Jones to do the music. His score was by far my favorite thing about the show, and my favorite animation music of the era. I can't imagine DuckTales without Jones's themes. (Although I never liked the theme song, which was by Mark Mueller instead.)

I'm noticing a trend here.

Shall we play a game?

Which will the next classic childrens show to be revisited?

And sorrry but I checked there is no childrens show called Global Thermonuclear War. ;)

Please not Billy Connolly, I love the guy but whenever he is doing voice work I just see Billy Connolly, he has a very distinctive voice.

I can't really "hear" Connolly or McCoy as Scrooge, but I know that's because Alan Young's voice, from Mickey's Christmas Carol through the Kingdom Hearts games, is ingrained in my mind.

I can, however, hear Craig Ferguson as Scrooge. And he's worked with Disney; he voiced Owl in the Winnie-the-Pooh film from a few years ago.

Ferguson occurred to me as a possibility, but I'm not sure he'd be interested in doing a weekly animated series. His character in the How to Train Your Dragon movies is played by Chris Edgerly in the Dreamworks Dragons series, even though it features several of the films' other main actors reprising their roles. All his voice credits have been for shorts or films, no series.

And yes, Young's voice is indelibly linked to Scrooge for me too. But that's why I think I'd prefer the role to be recast with someone who could reinvent it with their own distinctive sound, rather than someone trying to impersonate Young's Scrooge. Whenever I heard Greg Baldwin trying to imitate Mako as Iroh on Avatar:The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra, I couldn't get over how much he fell short of the real thing.

Is Terry McGovern still active? I want to see him as Launchpad again. And Russi Taylor will probably still do the nephews and Webby. Man, I need to get my plushies out of the attic! :D

And they've already done Thundercats and Voltron.

That's a good question.

MASK and COPS?

Either Darkwing Duck or Chip'N'Dale Resvue Rangers I could see as being the next one.

For those curious to see what DuckTales might look like in 3D, you should check out "Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas" as there is a segment in there that seems to be set in the DuckTales universe (although you don't see Mrs. Beakly, Li'l Webby or the butler), where Huey, Dewey and Louie take a trip to the North Pole.

But with this announcement, hopefully Disney will finish releasing the 1980's/1990's TV show on DVD (although it would be nice if they would rescan the entire series from the negatives and put it out on Blu-Ray, or at least a better looking DVD), and release the theatrical movie on Blu-Ray.

Never liked Ducktales, and never will.

So will they butcher Don Rosa's stories this time? I remember that they already used most of Barks's stories in the first series..

It needs to be dark and gritty because that what's considered kewl these days...
:shifty:
Well, that would be Rosa's Life and times of Scrooge McDuck.
Straight up adaptation. See my avatar.

Okay, it looks like they're sticking with 2D animation instead of 3D, which is reassuring. I'm not happy to see Donald included in the cast image. I know he was always a part of the Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge cartoons, but I hate Donald Duck. I hate his voice and I hate his personality. I'd rather have Launchpad back.

The real question is... will this be in continuity with the original DuckTales series, or will it be set in some alternate/reboot universe? Inquiring minds want to know.

The presence of Donald -- and Scrooge's red coat -- suggests it may be closer to the Carl Barks comics in some ways, although Webby is clearly there too, and reportedly other original DuckTales characters like Launchpad, Duckworth, Mrs. Beakley, and the individualized Beagle Boys (who were nameless in the original comics) will appear as well.
