DS9 Trivia

T'Girl

Vice Admiral
Admiral
A friend of mine referred me to this somewhat long list of DS9 trivia on the imdb.com website. Many of these I already knew about, but there were some interesting surprises in the mix.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106145/trivia

One example would be the Buck Bokai's baseball card, the collectable featured on Sisko's desk, had actor Keone Young on the front, and model maker Gregory Jein on the back. The pair bore an uncanny resemblance to each other.

Which I didn't know, surprising since I have a reproduction of that card in my collection, and have looked at both the front and back many times, and never noticed this.

Take a look.

:)

Can I be one of those annoying people that says, "I did know that one."?

I can't? Damn.

I knew that one too! :D

But it's an interesting read. There's some stuff on there I didn't know, like which actors were originally considered or actually offered roles on the show. James Earl Jones would have been a very, erm, interesting Sisko! Tony Todd, who ended up as old Jake in The Visitor, and who had already been Kurn on TNG, could have gone either way. He was two really different characters there!

Hard to imagine anyone else other than Avery though now. :)

Military ranks used in Star Trek are all based upon actual military ranks. Starfleet ranks are those of the US Navy: Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Admiral. Bajoran ranks are the same as those used in the US Army, Air Force, and Marines: 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel (or, as the Bajorans call it, 'Field Colonel'), Colonel, and General. (Kira, after her promotion, was referred to simply as 'Colonel', but she was promoted two steps in rank at once.) Klingon ranks are 'bekk' (an enlisted rating), Ensign, Lieutenant, Commander, Captain, Colonel, Brigadier, General, Admiral. Cardassian ranks are based on those of the ancient Roman Empire: Gil (equivalent to a Starfleet/ US Naval Lieutenant), Glinn (Commander), Gul (Captain), and Legate (Admiral).

The bit there which I was unaware of about Kira Nerys skipping a rank when she was promoted from Major to Colonel lends some credance to 'cadet' Kirk going from Lieutenant to Captain in the movie.

I made the assumption that the Bajorian simply didn't have the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, which is why Kira went from Major to Colonel. I don't immediately remember any Bajorian officer holding the exact rank of "Lieutenant Colonel."

Similarly, they don't seem to have both First and Second Lieutenants, just Lieutenant.

Problem I have with Field Colonel being subordinate to Colonel is the coloring of the insignia, in the US military, the rank which is gold colored, is subordinate to the rank which is silver colored. So a Second Lieutenant (gold insignia) is lower in rank to a First Lieutenant (silver). Kira's colonel insignia is gold. A Field Colonel's is silver

Thanks for the link, T'Girl. :) There were several interesting pieces of trivia I wasn't aware of, either. Bajorans have borrowed a monetary system from Lithuania, eh?
