You don't understand that there are varying amounts of caring? Let's say that I care very much about Series A, so I want to get the next book in that series right away and read it straight through. But maybe the Series B books aren't as interesting to me, so I may not pick up a Series B book unless I happen to be all caught up on Series A. In the mean time, I may try to find out the generalities of what's happening in Series B enough to sate my mild curiosity.I never understand threads like these. Either you care about the story or you don't. This "I care, but not enough to experience it as it was meant to be experienced" gibberish never made any sense, any of the dozen times I've seen it.
See, I call that "spoilers". If I care about a series at all, I want to experience it in full, spoiler-free. The degree of caring merely determines how soon that happens. If I fall behind on a series by a month or a year or a decade, that really doesn't matter; I'll either get to it eventually, or I stop caring. In the mean time, I may try to find out the generalities of what's happening in Series B enough to sate my mild curiosity.

I believe I have the first one, the one where Vaughn finds the Orb.
But I dont have the second one. Does that contain all of the books?

You don't say, "I liked seasons 1 and 2 but I couldn't find season 3 at the store right now, so I just got season 4. Could you tell me what happened in season 3?" Not for a show with any significant degree of serialization, anyway....
I know lots of people who did that for 24. I did it myself. I watched seasons 1-3 on DVD, couldn't get a hold of season 4 and started watching season 5 on DVD. A friend put me up to date on season four over a pint, and filled me in on important things he forgot as they came up while we were watching season 5. I *did* end up watching the rest of season 4, but only after season 5 was about 3/4 done.
I'm going to be doing a similar thing with Enterprise. I'm enjoying the relaunch books, but I never watched more than 3 episodes of the show. I rely on Memory Beta to fill me in on the details.
I think it's fine what comicbookwriter is asking for, and if I had the time, I'd try and provide it for him. I think the best way to do it would be to... I just got an idea. Brandon, you'll be getting a PM from me soon.
