DS9 Omnibus & TNG ebook question

For those that do want to get into eBooks but do not like reading at the computer, there are now good dedicated readers using eink. The one I have is the Sony Reader PRS-505 and I do enjoy using it to read books with. The screen is easy on the eys and the battery life is good.

More likely because it's now available in the omnibus at a much better price. But speaking as a book collector with a compulsion that series of books "match" in format, there'll always be people who want the original version.

Yes of course. I think the prices were only out of control because the MMPB appeared to be so much rarer that the subsequent volumes - and Marco had said its size was a factor in it not getting a reprint in MMPB earlier. So demand skyrocketed, and savvy Amazon second hand markets knew that.

It just seemed that Trent was inferring he didn't care for the book. I'd been speaking past tense with the high prices.

Never mind; I'm an utter dunce and somehow, despite the subject of the thread thus far, managed to miss the fact that we were talking about Mission Gamma: Twilight and not, you know, the other one... (the perils of tabbed browsing)

I loved this Twilight. Great job by DRG3.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Count me in as one of the really disappointed people that there won't be another DS9 Omnibus. I love the DS9-Relaunch so far but just can't see myself paying $33 for two used books.

They haven't said "No, not ever", they said "Not at the present time".

Have you tried a local public library?

Books 3 and 4 of the Mission Gamma series are two dollars apiece plus shipping on half.com.

Yep. They don't have a single DS9 book. Oddly enough they seem to have all the Vanguard, Enterprise Post-Finale, Voyager Post-Finale, Destiny Trilogy, Vulcan's Soul trilogy etc but not a single DS9 novel.

I just checked and while a search brings them up at $2 when I click on the books they are much more.

The best strategy is to place an order with a bookshop. Have you confirmed they're definitely, officially, out-of-print?

Officially I dont know, just that no shop has any on the shelves and no online place I have checked has any new copies in stock.

I may try placing an order with Waterstones in town though, see if they can find it.

This is a common problem for all bookshops today. With shelf space at a premium, and store managers knowing that so many people now order specialty lines via online shopping, the random browsers wandering into bricks 'n' mortar stores are setting themselves up for major disappointment if they only check the shelves and wander out again, empty-handed.

Chain bookstores often have computer databases that show stock, not only on their own shelves and back rooms, but the shelves of other stores owned by the same company. Asking at the front desk, they can sometimes quickly tell you how many books of a title are on their own shelves, awaiting unpacking, at the warehouse, on order, and in stock at other nearby stores.

But you must first ask.

When TNG was at its peak, many bookstores took an opportunity to stock their shelves with two copies of every ST novel then in print. I think Pocket was offering some kind of deal on a mixed box of back titles. Something similar may happen if JJ's ST film takes off in a big way. (Although, when Season Three of TNG started to do so well, at least the shops had a projected window of about two years to shift all that back stock. These days, many shops want all stock sold and gone for a title in just a few months.)

It's highly possible the book you want is sitting on a shelf or in a UK warehouse. Your Waterstones should also list the stock of other Waterstones.

Until you make that request, how does Waterstones know they're losing your money by not restocking "Cathedral" or "Lesser Evil", books that may last have been orderered in 2002? (And which are still on the shelves of several bookshops here in Sydney. We even have a few copies of the first two MMPBs!)

All very true. Normally, unless the book I go in for has been out for less than 6 months or so, I dont bother asking as I assume that if it isnt on the shelf they dont have any. Next time I go I shall enquire.

You should never assume as assuming is bad ;)

Simon & Schuster UK import ST novels from the USA by sea, and those not already pre-ordered by shops sit in a UK warehouse until re-ordered by UK bookshop managers. It's highly likely a book can be "out of print" in the US, but stocks still sitting around in all kinds of international nooks and crannies.
