DS9/First Contact Uniforms

Yuri Nikolayev

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I have a quick question regarding the DS9/First Contact uniforms…

Was there ever a clear distinction between the enlisted and officer versions? I know they eventually gave O’Brien a special Non-Com pip thingy, but besides that… was there any difference between actual uniforms, for instance enlisted not having any braids on the cuffs, etc.? I just never really paid attention or noticed any differences. TIA.

Simple answer, no,

There were some minor differences in other eras, but not in the 2370s. The few enlisted personnel that were specifically identified on DS9 and Voyager wore the exact same as their officer counterparts, just without insignia or with various non-pip insignia for Chief Petty Officer or specially commissioned crew (such as some of the Maquis and former Equinox crew on Voyager).

Yes indeed, there were several Admiral variants including the ones worn by Admiral Hayes, Admiral Nechayev and Admiral Dougherty in DS9 and the TNG films.

There have been so many Admiral variants of uniforms over the course of the various series that I think the only reasonable in-universe explanation is that when you reach that rank you're given some gold tape and told to stick it where you want to make yourself look fancy

On the Starfleet dress uniforms worn in "Rules of Engagement" the line of gold edging along the top of Chief O'Brien's tunic was about half as thick as the line of gold edging on the commissioned officer's tunics.

Also Admiral Paris and other admirals near the end of VOY.
