DS9 Creatures

First time posting on the forum here :)

I have been re-watching DS9 and I love the incorporation of other world creatures which seems to made their way into all the alien languages at the station. For example, Baneriam Hawks ('If Wishes Were Horses') , Algorian Mammoths ('The Wire'), Two-Headed Malgorians ('Progress'), Wanoni Tracehounds ('The Forsaken'). I am probably missing a lot on this list. I love how the writing incorporates them as similes to compare to humanoid behavior (eg Quark complaining about how Odo watches him like a 'Baneriam Hawk')

I have been trying to make a list of all the comparisons and think about what these creatures could possibly look like. Unfortunately most of these systems are pretty unknown so my intuitions are Terran limited.

Star Trek liked to use otherworldly creatures back in the original series too.
Did TNG not do this? Is this another TOS-ism that DS9 picked up?

I believe there's some in TNG as well. I remember the episode with a comparison to an Rigelian Ox ('The Schizoid Man'). Though I think it was less frequent as compared to the writing in DS9 (?)

And there was also that time of TNG when Q took the shape of an "Aldebaran Serpent", which is apparently a spherical creature with three cobra heads.
