DS9 bonus discs?

So, I just received seasons 3, 5 and 6 of DS9 from Amazon and season 5 came with a bonus disc. Is that normal for season 5 of DS9? If so, why didn't any of the other season have them?

I haven't had time to watch it yet so I don't even know if it has anything worth seeing on it, but I was pleasantly surprised by the bonus!

Wasn't that only the replacement for the last disc of season three where they screwed up something with "The Jem'Hadar"? It has the same content as that disc only without the bugs. At least that's what they did in Region 2. Which version do you have?

All the seasons came with a bonus disk. This has nothing to do with any replacement discs, which is an entirely different matter.

There was one replacement disc that was offered when one of the seasons came out, but I want to say that it was the disc that has "Let He Who Is Without Sin..." on it. In some sets, that episode was not playable and Paramount gave us a phone number that we could call to get a replacement. But that was only for those who happened to get an unplayable disk. Anyway, if you had posted this in the DS9 forum, my peeps in there might have had more info. But that is what I remember, anyway. I know one Niner who is still here who got a replacement disk, and he might be able to help you with the specifics of that if you are interested. He might see this thread, but if he doesn't, his name is Frontier.

The bonus disks were a different thing and came out in sets at the beginning. But I believe it was intended to be for a limited time. I don't think you can expect the bonus discs anymore - if you got one, it's gravy. Or if you really want all of them, I'm sure you could get them on ebay...although likely some of them are fairly pricey.

By the way, the best one is the season 3 bonus disk as it has a special feature about the Defiant on it, with the best Ira Behr quote ever - that the Defiant was "on a 5 year mission - to kick ass!"

Also of interest might be the fact that there were no bonus discs in R2 sets - all the stuff that was on R1 bonus discs came 'standard' in the R2 sets. So if you have a region free DVD player, it might be worth looking in to the R2 sets instead.

^^^ Thanks a ton! That really clears everything up. Although I'm kind of irked that R2 got more of the special features than we did here in the states.

I was also wondering, do the original TNG and VOY releases have bonus discs too (that's why I put this in General Trek, although my thread title is a bit misleading)?

^ VOY has bonus discs, exactly in the same vein as the DS9 sets.

TNG was more of a mixed bag. They didn't have a bonus disc in every season, for example. And I think you had to go to certain stores to get sets that had the bonus discs in them.

Also, the TNG 'bonus' discs tended to be 'crap discs they had sitting around that didn't sell' as opposed to 'features produced specifically for the DVD sets'. Stuff like old software, for example, were included as 'bonus discs' with the TNG sets.

By the way, the bonus discs are not the only reason to be jealous of the R2 releases. Their packaging was alot cooler than ours...and alot more sturdy as well. ;)

^ Very few people did.

I didn't either....but apparently enough did with that one disc that Paramount set up a number to call....

Although the reason why I remember it was Frontier who had the troubles is because he went through such a giant pain in the ass getting this disc from them! He had a running narrative of his dealings with Paramount in the DS9 forum for several weeks.

It was funny to...well...everyone in there but him.

Utter comedy of errors, IIRC.

Outside of the US, multi-format DVD recorder/players have always been quite common, or machines that are set "Region 2/Region 4-only" are easily reprogrammed to "play all".

The extra bonus material strategy was necessary to discourage UK, European and Australasian fans from ordering R1 sets from Amazon before the local sets were available in stores. The extra bonus material on the TNG and DS9 boxed sets (plus the funky plastic, modular canisters, which the US finally adopted for TOS and TAS) encouraged us to be more patient and to wait for our local R2/R4 releases - and thus sending our money to our local, authorized Paramount Home Video distributors.

In the USA, the company BestBuy decided to negotiate with Viacom to obtain all the special R2/R4 material and put it onto a "bonus disk" for each US release. So, only BestBuy US sets have those extra bits.

That must not be entirely true as I got a bonus disc version of season 5 via Amazon.com.

I got my copies of DS9 seasons 2, 3 and 7 in the mail today from Amazon (the rest were shipped a few days later so I don't have them yet) and my season 7
had a bonus disk, but seasons 2 and 3 didn't.

I see, so some of the sets were faulty and actually included the episode?

I remember the bonus discs being promoted as a Best Buy exclusive at the time of release, and my one Best Buy purchase (TOS season 3) was my only one to include a bonus disc...

...until I got VOY season 3 with a bonus disc from Amazon last week. I've speculated that Amazon got their hands on some unsold Best Buy stock (accounting for these huge discounts, maybe) but I have no idea if that's true or not.

The Best Buy overstock theory would make some sense - although Best Buy is still selling all of the Star Trek series, so I don't know how they can have overstock of something still in demand.

It's also possible that Paramount made too many of some of the bonus disks and let Amazon buy DVD sets that included the bonus disks.

I just got season 7 and it had a bonus disc! So for me 5 and 7 had bonus discs but 2,3 and 6 did not.

I just got the rest of the DS9 seasons in the mail today and I got bonus disks with seasons 4 and 5, but not with 6 or 1. Based on what we got I guess Amazon some how got bonus disks for seasons 4, 5 and 7 but not for the others (or they sold out).
