Why would Winona marry that idiot Frank?
I don't think she would marry her brother-in-law.
Then how would Frank be Kirk's stepdad?

As a side note, I loved that they still have Nokia - well, really that they still have brands, which means they still have commerce, which means the old crypto-socialist meritocracy can suck it.
Because they re-wrote the character. Uncle Frank is no more and some other guy is Kirk's stepdad.

Heheh. I'm with you on that. Kirk paid for his drinks at the bar. McCoy noted that his wife got everything in their divorce...which means she acquired a lot of wealth. Suck it, Picard!
It's a hit for me.![]()

Picard and the "crypto-socialist meritocracy" are a century later than this movie. So that's a swing and a miss.![]()
Well, yes and no. Roddenberry's statements on the subject suggest he was pushing Trek in this direction, as his own beliefs evolved. They were laying the groundwork for it with lines like "They're still using money, we have to find some...

Well, yes and no. Roddenberry's statements on the subject suggest he was pushing Trek in this direction, as his own beliefs evolved. They were laying the groundwork for it with lines like "They're still using money, we have to find some (I know this can be explained as "paper money, but the concept seemed quite alien to them, which is in itself odd.) Then there was Tom Paris' comments about the "New World Economy in the late 21st Century," suggesting a retcon of Picardism.
Anyway, it was inconsistently handled, but let's hope this silliness doesn't re-appear.
Back on the STARTREK echo on FidoNET (back in 1993-1995, pre-Intarwebnetz), we called that YATI.Anyway, it was inconsistently handled, but let's hope this silliness doesn't re-appear.
There was always SOME type of economic system in the Kirk era.
Remember Uhura in the K7 bar? Asking Jones about the tribble? "How much is it?"
She expected to PAY for it, so there had to be money of SOME kind.
Truth be told, we have no idea how old that Nokia device really is. The car is an antique; for all we know the device may be an antique too (albeit obviously not as old as the car), and the Nokia company itself might be as dead as George Kirk.
"Frank" was Greg Grunberg, by the way.
Ha! Damn, he is going to be in every single thing Abrams does, isn't he?
