Drunkle Frank?!?

Samuel T. Cogley

Vice Admiral
Admiral
What the fuck happened to Drunkle Frank?

People were pissing and moaning on these boards for months about how horrified they were that little Jimmy Kirk was going to have a drunk, abusive uncle as a caregiver.

And all we got was some guy on the Nokia for two seconds asking: "Dude, where's my car?"

That's it?

Was there supposed to be more?

Did we overreact to minutiae?

Or was this a clever set-up for the Drunkle Frank spin-off series?

I believe Abrams said it was one of the things he found didn't work and therefore was cut in the editing.
Or am I remembering wrong here ?

Wow, I remember when the first spoilers about Druncle Frank were released, I said it seemed like a bad idea, and everyone mocked me and told me to wait and see. But, it turns out the idea was so bad that Abrams himself cut it from the movie.

Vindication.

Shoulda been TV's Frank.

Then he could have pressed The Button and restored the cut Klingon scenes.

I was so happy when I recognised Greg's voice.

I don't agree about the Klingons. I'm glad they didn't make it into the film.

I didn't miss Druncle Frank. I don't think it would have added much more to the story. We just needed to know that he was a prick and that's one of the reasons Kirk was growing up troubled.

Grunberg being an asshole on the phone sold it well enough.

"Frank" was Greg Grunberg, by the way.

Ha! Damn, he is going to be in every single thing Abrams does, isn't he?

As a side note, I loved that they still have Nokia - well, really that they still have brands, which means they still have commerce, which means the old crypto-socialist meritocracy can suck it.

Truth be told, we have no idea how old that Nokia device really is. The car is an antique; for all we know the device may be an antique too (albeit obviously not as old as the car), and the Nokia company itself might be as dead as George Kirk.

You're right, and I never thought of that.

Back in the 1980s (and probably still) there were small companies that manufactured aftermarket radios for 1965/1966 Mustangs - they looked exactly like the originals in every detail (including one famous "tell" associated with the original equipment) but hid a cassette deck (then very much in demand) and an FM tuner. So the idea was to have something that perfectly matched the original in all appearances but incorporated modern technology behind the face.
