Drunk Driving

I'm sorry, I can't have a discussion with someone who either does not understand or will not acknowledge the distinctions between those who sexually abuse children, those who choose to get behind the wheel of a car when their blood alcohol level is over the legal limit, and those who have experienced alcohol dependence. Your willingness to combine these individuals into one group and dismiss their worth is quite clear, don't worry.

Agreed. I understand venting frustration toward drunk drivers who cause accidents, but they're nothing at all like child molesters. The differences between the two are like daylight and dark.

I'm sorry if that was harshly worded, it's just something that really gets to me.

Not at all. Please, always feel free to say what you want to say. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, I hope that they have located the girl and that they have good enough insurance to cover the damage.

But I also think that they SHOULD throw the book at her. Anyone who does what she did and runs away deserves to get in some serious trouble. As in, life changing trouble.

Some child molesters do too. But not enough of them. They're basically not worth it. They're not worth more people being sexually abused, and drunks aren't worth more people dying in horrifying car wrecks. Fuck 'em!

I don't believe in taking the right away for life after one offense, because realistically then they'll just drive without a license rather than make any attempt to better their lives. I think a year and some sort of probation is definitely required with a first offense.

And when you catch them for driving without a license after getting the thing revoked for drunk driving, that's when you toss em in the can for 15 years!

The worth of human beings is vastly overrated.

Sorry to hear about your dad's car, J. Glad they caught the girl. Very stupid of her to runaway.

Here in Australia, we have a legal limit of 0.05%, and police officers to stop any driver and perform a random breath test without reason. Roadblocks can be set up - for example leading out of town centres on Friday and Saturday nights, or during football or other events - where every single driver will be breath-tested.

Thanks, Elim, and everyone else who wishes us well (and even that one guy poking that voodoo doll with my likeness).

I'm just posting an update. While the insurance company hasn't got back with us yet on what Dad may get out of this, they did say the car was completely totaled, and that the drunk driver's car was also totaled. The whole story, from the officer, is that he was arrested, and as of this morning was released on bond. He's now on the run and they don't know where he went and they've issued a warrant for his arrest. They let us know just in case he decided to show up here for some reason, so we've been watching out for that.

What really sucks out of all of this? My car, the car that I'm letting Dad use to go to work, has blown a head gasket, oil has made it's way into the transmission, and the cooling system has sprung a massive leak but we don't know where. By massive, I mean that all of the coolant leaks out in about 24 hours, reserve and all. So...yay. Life really likes to wear those cleats when it kicks you, doesn't it?

Is it blowing white smoke? If so, then that is where your coolant is going. It's also possible that you'll find that the coolant is in the oil. Pull your dipstick. If the oil is the color of a chocolate milkshake, then you have coolant in it.

Also, check your waterpump. That's another likely culprit for that kind of leak.

Nope, it's not blowing white smoke. My Uncle is looking at it now, and he's saying we'll need to replace the valve cover gasket and the head gasket.

Well, another ode to the late night drunk driver. Someone slammed into my dad's car, where it was parked on the side of the road, about an hour ago. I'm pretty certain it totaled the car. We don't even know if they have car insurance. We don't even know who the second "they" is. The police arrested the first guy, but they think the woman driving it got away, and they're still looking for her. The passenger was drunk and they believe the driver was drunk.

I took a video of Dad's car. It was a silver 1988 Ford Thunderbird, and while it may not seem like much to some, this car was my Dad's baby. He took great care of it, it was in good condition, and he wanted to keep this car forever.

So here's the video I took:

I'm hoping they find the driver, and I'm really hoping they have insurance, because we only had liability on the Thunderbird. This couldn't have happened at a worse time.

It doesn't matter what kind of insurance you have... the drunk driver hit your vehicle on the rear section... with motor vehicle accidents, any rear-ender is the offending driver's fault, insurance-wise, which means you don't have to worry... the world of hurt is on him now, financially.

Rear-ended or not whenever some hits a parked car they're at fault.

Anyone who rear ends any car is the party at fault in an accident. Why do you think there is such a big problem with accidents for hire? The criminals intentionally slam on their brakes, so that you hit them, and they get to collect. If the rear-end driver was not automatically at fault, they wouldn't do that.

^ I wonder if that's why some people drive really stupidly- hoping that will happen.

Here, they capped how much people can get for "whiplash" and the like from that, it was such a problem.

I'm probably terrible for agreeing with this but... in some cases it's kinda true.

I almost think really, everyone should drive drunk. Someone sober was in an innocent accident as a passenger- broke some bones in their neck, and was paralyzed for life.

Someone was drunk, driving with a drunk bf behind the wheel, they crashed, the passanger broke the same bones, and will be pretty much fine, not paralyzed. Mind, insurance won't cover the cost of the new vehicle because of the alcohol- but at least there's some consequences for their actions.

Hit and run like that is common, and it's pretty low. Heard someone ran over a handicapped person, who died, and they slunk away and tried to get their car fix. Dunno how they caught them, but I was soooo glad.

I'm sure they'll catch the person... they have ways...

Hitting an animal = the animal is at fault. I've heard people say you should therefore not try to stop, slow down, avoid the animal. To me, that's moronic... extra damage to your car... at the very least.

I would say its done.
they Kelly blue book list a 1990 model between $2,000- $2,525

I would say there is way more damage here.
Sorry, I hope they catch her, but most insurance is voided if your drunk, may be your dad can sue for a recovery??

Well, the GEICO claims adjuster (for the other driver) called today, and they said they're trying to locate their customer (he jumped bail and is on the run), but they say they can't do anything until they get in contact with him, which just sounds really stupid to me. I contacted our insurance agent (we have Progressive) to see what they can do in this situation. The clock is ticking and we're all sharing one car for everything, since my car isn't running.

How much was his bail? They should give it to you. ;)

They didn't say, but yeah, that would be nice.

We're not sure how much the '88 is worth, but it's apparently (after looking up definitions), considered a classic now.

J: did your dad have uninsured coverage? If so, he would be eligible for that protection if the idiot didn't have coverage. The insurance company would then go after the idiot themselves.

On the Thunderbird? Not that I know of. They barely wanted to insure the Thunderbird at all considering it's age. Although I just heard from the agent a little bit ago that what they will do is give Geico a little more time to do whatever they need to do. If they don't get that done, Progressive will cut Dad a check and go after Geico on the matter themselves, so, yay Progressive!
