Drinking on the bridge

If the real US Navy is any indication of what the future Starfleet is like, then I would imagine it's perfectly fine to drink (non-alcoholic) beverages on a Starship's bridge.

You should see how much coffee is consumed on the bridge of an aircraft carrier.

In D. Carey's Ship of the Line (no number) Bateson's crew drank alcohol on the bridge I believe. But that was the old day on thier tuff border-partol spaceship. So drinking on the job was ok I guess...

That's assuming there are specified "food replicators" versus normal ones. It's widely know in Star Trek that replicators are used for a variety of things other than just food. Maybe Ensign Gomez was just abusing a resource at work, much like I am using my work day to discuss Star Trek! :techman:
Quite plausible. She could have been using the work replicator, that I'm sure they use to fashion all sorts of crap

& yes, I doubt a liquid spill would do much to damage a console, which seems to be like a one piece touch screen. The liquid would likely just spill to the carpet, which is probably where Worf's prune juice would end up too. Although, it would likely end up there, because had thrown it there

That might have been fun to see, actually

Since we've only seen the Captains drink on the bridge, I'd imagine that it's a privilege only they enjoy.

Mostly this. The Captain probably spends more time on the bridge than anyone else, he has a ready room just off the bridge so he can instantly be there if there is a problem, it is HIS ship and therefore he can do what he likes.

An Ensign on Conn seems to spend no more than two hours on the bridge, and therefore has no reason to stop for a coffee and a snack.

In combat then there would be times when the senior officers spend hours at their stations, but are likely to be sent away for a change of scene when they need food.

When things are stressed though, and you literally cant leave the bridge for hours then a quick sandwich at your station is probably a good idea.

That's quite correct. The replicator could also be used to create a needed tool, a spare part, or even minor medical supplies. We've also seen replicators being used (on DS9) to introduce compounds to the atmosphere, so perhaps the replicator is also a secondary safety (or defensive) system. In short, there are any number of potentially useful things a replicator can do, so the question really is: why NOT have one or more on the bridge?

It's also reasonable to assume that not all species are capable of lasting an entire shift without food or water (or methane, or whatnot) to ingest. You don't need your helm officer literally starving to death or becoming dehydrated just because sombody decided that 8 hours is a logical amount of time to serve on a shift.

I was watching ST Nemesis the other day and i noticed what looked like a replicator on the bridge, i was wondering what the official rules would be for a federation bridge officer about drinking on the bridge whilst on duty ( non alcoholic ofc )

Thanks

Yammer5

After what they went thru on that ship in Nemesis, I would say to hell with the regulations, we deserve a drink lol

Just imagine this: Worf is enjoying... whatever it is he drinks, while standing at his station. Suddenly a Romulan ship decloaks and fires at them. Where does Worf put his drink down? On the Captain's head???

Since we've only seen the Captains drink on the bridge, I'd imagine that it's a privilege only they enjoy. If I recall, there was a place to put the cup between the Captain's chair and either Troi's or Riker's.

They probably have retractable cupholders like we do in cars nowadays. In fact, they probably judge what starship they want to serve on by how many cupholders are near their workstation... ;)

Maybe by the 24th century, the cupholder comes with its own integrated mini-inertial-dampener, to prevent spillage.

PICARD: "Engineering, divert emergency power to forward shields. And my cupholder, dammit!"

As I've heard my father who was a CWO in the USN say, the navy runs on a sea of blue, a sea of white (i.e. paper), and a sea of black (i.e. coffee).
