Dragon Age II

I'm enjoying the gameplay so far, but I'm around 8 hours in and I still don't really know what the plot is. Granted, I'm doing every sidequest that comes my way, but it seems an odd choice. There have been rumblings about Qunari and such, so I'm thinking that may have something to do with it.

Finally got around to playing my copy. Not really seeing why the press dislike the game so much. While it is alot simpler, I find that alot of what was removed just bogged down the first game anyways.

Agreed, clint g. Not all the press seem to dislike it, though. GameTrailers gave it a 9.2, and IGN gave it an 8.5.

Mostly I agree. I wish they hadn't removed the variety in the dungeon layouts - it's worse than the original Mass Effect for level reuse...

You should look at the Bioware forums, a lot of posters there are saying DA2 is the worst Bioware game ever and that EA/Bioware are the devil. Then again people there said the same thing about Mass Effect 2.

If anything, I disliked the changes made to ME2 more than the changes they made to DA2. At least DA2 retains its RPG feel

Yeah, that's probably my biggest peeve with the game. The environments are way too repetitive.

Meh. If game companies did everything the way the fans want them done, pretty much every game would suck.

It's not blowing my socks off but it's a good game. It's not in the same league as Origins, I miss the epic nature of the story that first game had.

It feels like a beefed up expansion or mod. I think they could've taken a lot of these ideas and just released it as Dragon Age: Kirkwall to hold fans over while the true sequel to Dragon Age: Origins was being made.

Yeah, so far that's my only complaint too. I realise with a game this big they have to conserve memory wherever possible but there are ways to do it that aren't quite so blatant.

Not a lot of people picked up on it but ME2 had just as much map reuse as ME1, but they were *much* better at disguising it by altering the lighting and what I suppose you might call set dressing. Of course most of the rooms in ME2 are big square boxes which one imagines are much easier to recycle than the kinds of natural environments like caves and coast lines. Still, they could have changed it up a little more.

Indeed, if anyone got the 'Exiled Prince' DLC one of the maps in that quest line includes the very same mine/cave system map used in several other places but is "redressed" to the point that it's only just noticeable. Why they couldn't do that for the rest of the game I have no idea.

Quick question for those who are far along the game or have finished it

So i just started the Deep Roads Expedition and were betrayed by Bartram and am fighting that big Rock Wraith that spawns the smaller Rock thingies. Now up until that point there was no real story to the game.. just the characters trying to make it in Kirkwall and earning some money. I've done tons of quests but they were all self contained and didn't seem to be connected at all. Will there be a bigger story that emerges at one point or ist that all i can expect? DA:O had this huge story from the get go and it was excellent.. so far i'm not seeing anything like that.

There's actually much more to the story than it seems at that early stage. You're really only just delving into the real meat of it.

I think Dragon Age 2 is a lot like Mass Effect 2 in that it suffers from "second act syndrome". There is a massive event at the end of the game that clearly serves as a set up for a third game in the series. Everything else is mainly filler. Quality filler, but filler nonetheless.

This i got too from Mass Effect 2.. some gameplay changes but the whole story was concentrated in a few missions while the rest of the game you were assembling your team, gear and levelling up.

Granted.. i still had much fun but overall it was a let down storywise and i fear it will be similar with this game. Oh well.. i have the whole week off.. guess what i'll be doing after i have cleared my backlog of stuff to do (which shouldn't take more than half a day).

To be fair, Bioware have always done good characters far better than good plot. That's why the loyalty missions were the highlight of ME2.

I'm currently on act 2 and enjoying the game. Some of the environments are a bit samey (as others have mentioned) but I think it's a good game.

For my first playthrough, I've gone the Rogue route with a generally helpful though sarcastic Hawke.

^Same here. Snarky duel wielding rogues are always the most fun and that's pretty much what my original DA:O character was (though I actually imported my mage save file.)

One thing that is bothering me though is the apparent lack of paired daggers. I know it's hardly vital but you'd think now that daggers are only used by duel wielding rogues that there'd be some matched sets. I assume at some point late in the game you'll be able to obtain all that gear you had in the exaggerated prologue, but it'd be nice not to always have odd pairs.

Oh and I don't know if anyone else has encountered this but the targeting can occasionally be a little buggy when you pause. Just sometimes mind, but in a heated battle it can be a bit annoying when you suddenly find that no matter what you do the little sword icon won't come up and you have to switch to another character, wait for the AI to kick in and hope it wasn't cost you a party member.
