Dragon Age - Discussion Thread

God bless this guy's corrupted save, it's a nightmare factory of comedy. I was laughing so hard during the second one, tears were streaming down my face.

I'm in my second playthrough, and this time I sided with the templars instead of mages.

The Templar Quest was pretty lame compared to the Mage Quest. Instead of time traveling, you get stuck in your own head by a demon, and have to get out. It just wasn't as interesting as the trip through time in the Mage quest. It wasn't bad by any means, but I definitely prefer the Mage story to the templar one.

^Same here, and the timer where you constantly have to run back to the hall to defend it is a pain in the ass for someone like me who always has to stop and loot EVERYTHING. Plus if the timer gets too low, Barris ends up dying in the end. And also, siding with the templars sort of feels like a jerk thing to do since you're basically turning your back on Dorian after he's asked you for help, whereas the templars have pretty much been ignoring you.

All that being said, however, you do get a much better introduction to Cole, and I kind of like the main storyline a little better going forward, since Calpernia's a more interesting antagonist than Samson.

Sigh...so, sadly, the game (that I've been playing on Xbox One) suffered a fatal crash yesterday following the completion of the major "In Your Heart Shall Burn" milestone. It looks like it was trying to save progress but the thing was spinning for about 10 minutes. I stopped the game and reloaded it and now it won't even start. Total catastrophic failure. I've seen similar reports of this behavior out there and apparently the X1 is the only platform that hasn't received a stability patch from Bioware. Sad, considering all the time I've been putting into the game. I'm now back on my old 360 playing the new World of Tanks upgrade, waiting for the patch. :(

Evil Twin, could you put that stuff in spoiler brackets?

The game has been out for a while, but playthroughs take very long if you don't mainline it, and replayability can be diminished by slight spoilers like these.

Just a heads up in case nobody noticed, but there's a problem with the latest patch. It seems as though any shields crafted prior to the patch will have their armour rating set to zero. Newly crafted shields are apparently fine, but that's of little consolation to anyone who's used up finite dragon materials, masterwork enchantments & runes. Supposedly they are working on a hotfix, but no ETA as of yet.

It's my understanding that that's merely a visual glitch; the shields are still giving their intended armor rating. For instance, my shields crafted with tier 3 metals show "0 Armor Rating: Front", but the first line of the stats below shows "+44 armor rating".

They say they've de-randomised party banter... in fact it seems to be less frequent than before...
Trying to get as much side questing done as possible before I go to the winter palace ball. Might get there this weekend, but will have a walkthrough open at all times so I don't waste time (Mage elves get a huge reduction in initial approval).

I just double checked to be sure and I'm afraid it appears that you're incorrect. While yes, a front defence value is displayed in the stats, looking at Cassandra's attributes with and without a pre-patch crafted shield shows that the front defence value isn't being applied. Indeed, she was better off in that respect with no shield at all since the default wooden shield appears to have a +5 value.

I suppose it's possible that it's just not registering with the attributes window, but I doubt it.

That's not an unwise decision because at one point i was stuck and nothing moved forward story or eventwise. Turns out i needed to "crack" the lock of a specific door which was apparently tied to the storyline (though absolutely no indication whatsoever that it was important).

By that point i was really mad at the game because i have searched all available areas top to bottom multiple times and couldn't figure it out. Only a walkthrough gave me the right pointer.

I'm still in the relatively early stages of the game - just got to Skyhold. I'd like to go back and clip the dragon in the Hinterlands but he's still a tough nut to crack. Any suggestions on which combination of party members would be best to go after him? I'm level 12 and most of the NPC's are still at 11.

-10 initial approval is nothin'. You can make it back almost immediately. Apparently it's the Qunari that get the biggest initial hit, -15.

Did the Winter Palace on my dwarf last night:

BRING IT ON!

Actually what was more ridiculous to me was the female dwarf's giant torpedo boobs in that dress outfit. Looked even worse than in the Skyhold outfit. :D

Depends on your builds and equipment. If you want to to bring along Bull (he *really* likes dragon slaying) make sure you get 'Unbowed' as it's the only really viable way to get him to generate guard. Without it he goes down very fast. Other than that, either Cass or Blackwall are pretty solid tanks.

Conversely whichever rogue you bring along (ranged is probably best) make sure you get their threat reduction passives along with the stealth cloak and maybe 'evade'.

A mage with good barrier generation is a *must*. It's a long fight you don't want to leant too much on healing potions as they'll get used up fast. Likewise it's probably worth equipping (and, if possible upgrading) fire resistance potions for everyone. Since it's a fire dragon it's immune to any fire damage so ice spells and the most powerful ice staffs you have are in order.

Don't be afraid to use the respec amulets if you think you've borked a class build. You should already have had two free ones by the time you get to Skyhold and even then, they're only a few hundred gold a piece.

Equipment wise it's just a matter of making sure everyone has the best armour and weapons available. If someone's gear is noticeable under-level then it's usually worth crafting them something better. You might think fire resistance is a godo idea, but IMO they're so situational that it's probably better to go with melee/ranged/magical defence and leave the elemental side to the tonics.

As for the fight itself, it's important to not get bogged down in the first area where the dragon just circles, spitting fireballs at you while you waste time scrapping with Dragonlings. move forwards as fast as possible, talking as little damage as you can manage. Don't be afraid to disengage and run straight past them; you need to get to the end of the valley where the high dragon will land and wait for you to catch up. Once it dose, you can turn around and deal with anything that still following you before moving on to the main fight.

Aside from that, it's just like any boss fight with different phases and attack patterns. So long as you tank can keep their threat high, you mage can keep their barriers regenerating and you rogue can pur on the damage while keeping out of sight you should do fine.

If you get really stuck you can always try looking at a tutorial video to see how the fight progresses.

There are a few exploits, but I honestly find the idea tedious. Besides, if you're going to do that, you may as well just flip the difficulty down to casual and be done with it. Dragon fights are supposed to be hard; that's the whole point. ;)

I never had a problem maxing out the approval, even with a dalish mage. Just make sure to pick the cagey responses (answering a question with a question is usually a safe bet), always turn up to the ballroom fashionable late and don't spend too much time out of bounds.

I'm severely stretching out the first playthrough at the moment (I've been ready to start the mission to move against
Corypheus
for a quite some time, sitting at close to 300 power now), but still not feeling threatened to burn out on the game.

Still need to collect the final couple of shards, and get the dragon slaying achievement, and a bunch of other side activities and quests, mostly treasure map type stuff.

Main quest complete! But apparently in doing so I now have no crafting in the undercroft. :-( Oh well...

Edit: apparently that's a glitch, will try reloading tomorrow.

^Yeah, I was about to say I was definitely able to craft post endgame as I wanted everyone kitted out for any future DLC.
Also...
I needed to respec and outfit Dorian to a defensive/support role to replace Solas.

Well they were originally going to make it multiplayer only, so my guess is they'll focus there - like with Blizzard and Starcraft, where the first game had a lot more focus on the story, but it's an afterthought in Starcraft 2.
